"And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. And behold, the LORD stood above it..." Genesis 28:12,13a
What was God showing Jacob by using this image of a ladder stretching from earth to heaven, with angels ascending and descending, and the LORD standing above the ladder? Was the ladder showing that since God was in covenant relationship with Jacob, there was a type of bridge or open passageway between heaven and Jacob, where the very angels of God were watching over him and he had access to God himself? We know the story about where Jacob wrestles with God, and in Genesis 32:28, he is told, "Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed." That is a powerful statement.
Any thoughts about the symbolism regarding the ladder to heaven?

Any thoughts about the symbolism regarding the ladder to heaven? "...Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." - John 1:51
