These are pretty strong words from the Lord about hell. I know there are people that teach that hell is nothing more than the grave, but not if you believe Jesus. He clearly is not telling people that they need to go out and cut off their limbs and pluck out their eyes. That is not the point he is making. What he is doing is trying to get across to us just how bad of a place hell really is. It is such a bad place, that a person would be better off to cut off their hand, foot or pluck out their eye if one of those things were standing in the way of them making it into heaven.
Jesus says that in hell, the fire is never quenched. Some teach that you will simply be burned up, but if that were the case, why bother to mention the fact the fire is eternal? In addition to that, Jesus speaks of a person having "their worm" and he says it "dieth not," indicated that people in hell are literally being eaten on by a worm. That is on top of the fact they are already in torment from the flames of the fire. Jesus says it would be better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than two, as opposed to the alternative which is hell. Those are the only choices we have. I want us to notice that he mentions our choice as the kingdom of God or hell. With that in mind, consider the words of the Apostle Paul
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21
With this in mind, what does Jesus say? "it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched." It is the kingdom of God or hell, and we see that those who continue in a lifestyle of willful sins shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Paul mentions this twice, in 1 Corinthians and Galatians. I know there are many who are teaching that all you have to do is believe and your faith will save you, no matter how you live, but the Bible doesn't teach that. Listen to the words of James.
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? James 2:19,20
Is your heart right with God? Do you have unconfessed sin? Given the warnings we have in scripture about what a horrible place hell is, if you are not sure, I encourage you in the strongest way to make things right now. Don't believe the false teachers out there telling you that how you live makes no difference, and it is faith plus nothing. These men are liars. They are deceivers. What they are saying is in direct contradiction to scripture. Who will you believe, them or the Bible? Still, if you are not sure about where you stand with God because of unconfessed sin, I have good news from God's Word.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
You don't have to go to a priest in a confessional booth. You don't have to confess your sins to me. Confess them directly to God, and then go and sin no more.
