Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. And the LROD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. 1 Samuel 8:4-7
But they cried out, Away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cesar. John 19:15
In the first instance, the children of Israel desired an earthly King so they could be like the other nations around them. Until this time, judges had led the nation, and now they were being led by Samuel. In reality, God was their King, and the people that ruled over Israel were simply there to tell them what thus saith the Lord. They were not a King and were not sovereign. When they rose up and told Samuel they desired a man to rule over them, God made it clear that they were not rejecting Samuel, but they were rejecting God. They didn't want him to rule them anymore.
In the second instance, we see Jesus being brought before Pilate, and Pilate, knowing Jesus was innocent of wrong doing, sought to let him go, but the people would have no part of it. Jesus is God, and he was their true King, but they once again rejected God, and chose a man as their King, in this case, Cesar, of all people.
What we need to consider is who do we choose? Are we choosing human leaders or Jesus? There will always have to be human beings in positions of authority, but who leads them? Are they simply making their own choices of what to do, or are they led by King Jesus? A man who sees himself as the supreme authority looks to himself as the one having the final say, and we need to be careful about that. This includes me. We need to recognize that we all have one King that is sovereign and reigns over all of us, and his name is Jesus Christ.
When I think about this nation called America, we give lip service to the idea we are one nation under God. I wish that this were true. That would mean that while a human man serves as President, they recognize Jesus is King and supreme in authority. How do they do that? By constantly seeking the Bible for guidance, and being in prayer as well. The same thing should apply everywhere, including ministries like Narrow Way. Yes, there are Administrators. Yes, in a way, the buck stops with them, but I would like to always look at Jesus Christ as being our Supreme Authority. I would like to see him as the true head of this ministry, and our King. That means that we need to look to His leadership for guidance in the decisions we make. Let it never be said that we rejected Christ from being our King in this ministry and prefer a human being. Yes, there are human beings with powers delegated to them to run things, but Jesus Christ is and shall always be King as long as I have anything to do with it.
