And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Just who Melchizedek is has been a controversy. He is said to be the King of Salem, so if we simply leave it at that, he is just a righteous King, but we quickly realize there is more to him than that. He is called the priest of the most high God, and Abram gave him his tithes. Then there is the matter of what Hebrews 7:3 says about him. "Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually."
While not known as Jesus, do you suppose that Melchizedek was the Son of God, much as the fourth man in the fire in Daniel was?

I do not know much about this... But I have heard something about it.
Perhaps, our sister Sister has something to tell us about this... It would be interesting.
Blessings!

its God. who else dont have a mother or father besides adam and eve? and also no beginning of days nor end of life... not a regular man born, especially born into sin who has to die because sin entered. there is no other it could be. all men die. and not likely Abraham would be tithing to a fallen angel and the bible speak of this as it does. God could have done popped up all thru history. whats to stop Him if He wanted to? (LOL... nothing)
who else could it be? can you name even one?

I tend to agree with you on this. I don't know who else it could be either. I think God appeared to Abraham and went by the name Melchizedek. He was called the King of Salem, and Jesus is know as the Prince of Peace. Salem means peace. I think that is the most logical answer, but most people are scared to come out and say so.

"Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing." - Hebrews 7:23
"But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood." - Hebrews 7:24
"...for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him:
“The Lord has sworn And will not relent, ‘You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek’..." - Hebrews 7:21

Do you think that Salem was an actual place, and Melchizedek was the King over that place, as well as being God's high priest?

I have no idea. I was told He was Jesus That is how it has always appeared to me, but there is not universal agreement over the matter, and I am not 100 percent certain. I have even heard Joseph Chambers kind of skirt the issue. It is like he is scared to come out and openly speculate about it. I think some look at it like a sort of idolatry to even consider it might have been the Son of God taking on that form. It is not like anyone would pray to Melchizedek, or at least I hope not! We pray to the Father in the name of Jesus Christ, but we know God has appeared in different places in the Old Testament, like in the book of Daniel when he was the fourth man in the fire.

lets not do any skirting around the topic....
Sit at My Right Hand Psa 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. Psa 110:2 The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. Psa 110:3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth. Psa 110:4 The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. Psa 110:5 The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. Psa 110:6 He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries. Psa 110:7 He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.
Heb 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; Heb 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Heb 10:11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: Heb 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; Heb 10:13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Gen 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Luk 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Luk 22:20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
only three people i am aware of in the bible are refered to as the son of God... Jesus, Adam, and Melchizedek. any others?
Heb 5:5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. Heb 5:6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Heb 5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Heb 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; Heb 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Heb 5:10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
Heb 7:2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
back in the day kind and prince were synonymous. who else would be a king to the King of Kings?
Heb 7:3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. Heb 5:6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Heb 7:15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, Heb 7:16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.
G3665 ὁμοιότης homoiotēs hom-oy-ot'ace From G3664; resemblance: - like as, similitude.
Heb 7:16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

I personally go back and forth concerning Melchizedek either being a literal man that died, and him being Jesus. I cannot say at this moment I am 100 % sure, but I would like to come to place to were I one day know. And anyhow, we will all know one day, that is for sure. I have been reading some of the comments that Jimmy Swaggart says on this issue, and he personally believes that Melchizedek was a man, that was a type of Christ, but not Christ himself. Here are interesting verses to think about, which I will put side by side to each other: Heb 7:2-3 (2) To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; (3) Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.
| Heb 7:5-6 (5) And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: (6) But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.
|
Here is a comment from Jimmy, on verse 3: (Jimmy Swaggart)
(Without father, without mother (only means there was no record made of the name of his father, his mother, or any of his posterity), without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life (means that the Holy Spirit intended Melchizedek to be without genealogy, in order that he may serve as the Type)...)Now I am not so certain that I would agree with Jimmy here, but then again who knows; now in verse 6 it does mention "but he (Melchizedek) whose descent is not counted from them (the Levites), his descent is not counted from the Levites, but also was his descendants even counted??? But I must admit that the way things are written in verse 3, sure does sound more like Jesus to me, but then again there is this scripture: Heb 7:14-15 (14) For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. (15) And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, I find the words after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, very interesting. Similitude means similar or after the same fashion, and another priest usually means another. Hmmm, something to really think about.

Melchizedek is the "Word of God" ...."translated" into flesh. Not yet born of woman when he appeared to Abraham.
Salem is "his kingdom"...."The City of Peace", where Abraham was spiritually dwelling by obeying the Word of God.
Mechizedek was not King of a physical city, but a spiritual city for the God fearing to seek refuge in......the same City of which we are now called to dwell in - The kingdom of God/Holy Jerusalem. He was Abraham's King, and he is also our King if we follow in his commandments.
Melchizedek had no mother or father (of man) on this earth when he appeared to Abraham. He had no genealogy. You cannot trace him back then (to man), because he came straight from heaven, and "translated" as "flesh", to appear to Abraham then returned to heaven after doing this.
Yes he is Jesus, but not known as Jesus then, but the same Word of God, not born yet, but translated into flesh so that Abraham could meet the Word of God face to face, his King.
