And when Pharaoh drew night, the children of Israel lift up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD. And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you today: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today ye shall see them again no more forever. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
God had brought the children of Israel out of Egypt with a strong hand, and led them by the way of the Red Sea. By this time, the Egyptians realized that the children of Israel had fled and spoiled them, and Pharaoh sent a mighty army after them. They were facing the Red Sea in front of them, and a huge army behind them, and it appeared they were trapped, and on the verge of being destroyed.
Have you ever faced a situation that seemed hopeless, like there was nothing you could do and no way out? It could be anything. A financial situation where it seemed hopeless. A sickness that the doctors say there is no cure for. Does it seem like you have the weight of the world upon you, and there is no place to run, you are trapped? Imagine the situation the children of Israel were facing! The Egyptians were enraged against them, and had an army of chariots getting ready to attack. They had no way to fight back, and there was no place to retreat or run, as the sea lay in front of them. Yet, God was in control the entire time. Red Sea in front? No problem. God simply parted the water and the children of Israel went through on dry land. Pharaoh's chariots pursuing them? No problem. God simply stopped holding back the water, and the entire Egyptian army was drowned!
These stories are given to us, not just because they are interesting, but as examples. In this case, we see the mighty power of God at work, and know that if he can deliver the children of Israel in a situation like this, he can certainly deliver us out of whatever trouble we are facing.
