So it says if any man be contentions, but contentions about what? About not following the rules of the church. That is simple and not burdensome.
People who want to fight and promote dissensions for small things.

Was the custom referring to, woman having long hair, and men having short hair?
No not at all, for that was not a custom, it is the way God wants men and women to be.

1Co 11:3-5 (3) But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. (4) Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. (5) But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
Now the next verses I will show, reveals what the covering is:
1Co 11:13-15 (13) Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? (14) Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? (15) But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
By following the train of thought, it leads you to what God says the covering is, which is women's long hair.
It is the bible self describing what it is , without man's interpretation.
And many people take this issue litely, but is dishonoring Christ a lite issue? And does God want woman to dishonor their head , man?

Our real covering is Jesus. And God is our provider.
If a woman chooses to wear some fabric on her dome in church it should be respected, as she is doing so to Honor God. I do not believe a woman has to do this as scripture says her hair is her covering. But if you see a woman doing this its to God. i guess it could be for show, but more than likely not. there used to be a trendy thing for women to wear what i call fancy hats to church. they would have flowers and lacy stuff on it. that always used to confuse me being younger... I have to take off my camo baseball cap but women can wear these hats... hats which block the view of those sitting behind them? now that I am older it makes more sense. whether it was being worn as a covering or to dress up i do not know and will leave the issues of the heart stuff to God as He is way better at that than i am. I am sure some will say the fancy hat thing dont count as a covering, and there may be some validity to that, either way i am not sure at this point in time.
My thoughts on this are simple.. if a woman chooses to wear a covering in church... praise God, if she chooses to have her hair as her covering in church... Praise God. my other thoughts are I am interested in hearing what others have to say about this, even if it is a little bit contentious. (lol)
I, being a man, have not really gave it much thought as it says hair is a covering. I read that and went on to the next thing.

So what was this custom?
1Co 11:6 (6) For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
Since the bible reveals to us that the woman's long hair is her covering, her not being covered, would mean that she has short hair, and not long hair.
And it seems that the Corinthians had a certain custom, that if the woman had short hair that she should be also shorn or shaven.
And if it be a shame for a woman to be shaven (basically to the point of being bald), let her be covered, or veiled.
And here it is obvious that this woman with short hair cannot automatically grow her hair to be long at that instance, thus let her be covered or veiled.
Paul was not necessarily going against this law, for he was mentioning it, but by the next verse I will show, Paul was indeed showing that it was unnecessary.
1Co 11:16 (16) But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
If someone is contentious about this, then their is no such custom, because this custom is really unnecessary.
What was this custom for?
It seems to me that it was for the sake of reproving shame.
And if it be a shame for the woman to be shorn or shaven, then an option was to be veiled.
But all of this is unnecessary, for if we have dishonored our head, all you need to do is repent, and it is washed under the blood of the lamb, he covers our sins (not veils), and then a woman should just let her hair grow, that is all, and serve God with confidence..

To be contentious.
"...we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God." - 1 Corinthians 11:16

Show me anywhere in the whole entire bible, to were being contentious has been referred to as being a custom?

I looked in the bible so to find other verses with the same Greek word for custom, as mentioned in our Corinthians verse, and I found just one more in the new testament, here is the verse:
Joh 18:39 (39) But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
This sure does not refer to an attitude.

Show me anywhere in the whole entire bible, to were being contentious has been referred to as being a custom? Custom is just a word that describes pattern of behavior (approximately).
Dictionary:
cus-tom
1. a traditional and widely accepted way of behaving or doing something that is specific to a particular society, place, or time.
I do not read the Bible in English in private, I read it in my native language (Portuguese). And the above meaning is clear to me.

Joh 18:39
(39) But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
Well the word custom for this verse, is the same Greek word for custom as Corinthians.
And here it is referring to a practice, or tradition that they had of releasing someone on the passover, which does not refer to a type of attitude at all.

Well the word custom for this verse, is the same Greek word for custom as Corinthians. Sorry, I do not use this method for interpreting Bible verses.
Then, we will probably never agree.

Ok then how about this scripture:
Joh 18:39
(39) But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
Do you feel that this particular scripture is referring to a particular attitude, were it mentions custom?

And even in the definition you gave, which comes from Oxford dictionaries, if you quote more of it, it shows examples of it's usage:
Here it is:
(cus·tom
[ˈkəstəm]
NOUN
customs (plural noun)
a traditional and widely accepted way of behaving or doing something that is specific to a particular society, place, or time.
"the old English custom of dancing around the maypole" · "custom demanded that a person should have gifts for the child")

Was the custom referring to, woman having long hair, and men having short hair? No not at all, for that was not a custom, it is the way God wants men and women to be. I didn't understand this for the longest time....but now I believe that Paul was saying that the church has no such custom of women NOT wearing a covering: (13) Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? (14) Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? (15) But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. (16) But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God. v. 16 is answering his own question of v. 13....is it comely for a woman to pray to God uncovered.....the answer is no, and he is saying the churches have no such custom of woman praying unto God uncovered. He is asserting this to any one who would be contentious about it.....that he does not allow for any such custom of women coming to Christian assembly without a covering. (I think he is even implying that a covering is just normal, while being un-covered is a strange custom, so to speak, that the churches do not subscribe to.)

Do you feel that this particular scripture is referring to a particular attitude, were it mentions custom? It is the same thing, they had the custom/tradition/practice of giving liberty to one prisoner in the day of passover.
