This topic answers the following question:
"God gave the law of Moses with it's trillion laws (actually it can be any number made up for effect,
however much you can convince people is right) to show us how hopeless it is to try to keep it so we will know how much we need grace."
Is that true? Is there any scripture anywhere in the Old or New Testament that says this? Did Jesus or the Apostles teach this?
God gave the Law of Moses (with ordinances that must be kept), but what most people forgot to mention is that He also gave His Law:
The Ten Commandments
Could people keep the Law of Moses?
Certainly yes, it was easy, just read and do as you are directed by your carnal mind.
The problem is that while doing that you were breaking the Law of God: The Ten Commandments.
"Because the carnal mind is enmity against God:
for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." - Romans 8:7
Then God would hope that they would perceive they were breaking His law and the need to have faith in His promised Savior.
It was exactly by this faith they were justified, not through works of the Law because they were constantly breaking the Law.
"Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law:
that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God." - Romans 3:19
People in the Old Covenant were all in the flesh and consequently they were slaves of sin.
And when I say breaking the Law, it does not necessarily mean they were not tithing, or eating pork.
Because it is easy to circumcise a born baby, and eat this and that.
But keeping track of doing all and making sure that every detail is correct is burdensome.
Doing that was not meant to save anyone, in fact, many people were constantly breaking these laws anyway.
"They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens
behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination,
and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the Lord." - Isaiah 66:17
The problem is that some of the religious leaders tried to appear that they were keeping the Law.
And indeed, they could tithe and offer an animal sacrifice for their sins, and avoid pork and other unclean animals, but that was not meant to save anyone.
"For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins." - Hebrews 10:4
What the religious leaders could not do was to keep the Law in truth. The Law condemned them and all others who were under the Law:
The Ten Commandments
"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law,
judgment, mercy, and faith:
these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." - Matthew 23:23
To understand the hypocrisy of the religious leaders, they condemned people who were apparently was breaking the Law:
"And the Pharisees said unto him,
Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?" - Mark 2:24
As the carnal mind cannot understand and properly apply the Law of God, they were condemning people for not breaking the Law.
"...Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." - Matthew 12:12
And they were mercilessly condemning people that were just as wicked as they were.
"Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?" - John 8:5
"...He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first." - John 8:7
"Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience,
went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last..." - John 8:9
As you can see, they could keep the Law (carnally speaking), but they could not keep the Law in truth.
"For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." - John 1:17
Then they would have to wait in faith for the promised Savior:
"To grant us that we,
Being delivered from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear,
In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life." - Luke 1:74-75
"...for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified." - John 7:39
Then, all those who were living under the Old Covenant (without exception) were slaves to sin.
And they would have to keep sacrificing animals in order to avoid the wrath of God to fall upon them.
It was a hard life, living with fear and worry of not breaking His commandments while living in a flesh that hated God.
And the religious leaders would not make their lives easier, if they were caught in the least they would be put to death mercilessly.
No one living in under the Law could keep the Law of God: The Ten Commandments.
And Paul and Peter clearly says that in their letters:
"For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles —
when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries." - 1 Peter 4:3
"For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various
lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another." - Titus 3:3
And the Law of Moses, full of ordinances were never meant to be followed with a carnal mind and to mercilessly condemn the apparent transgressors.
They killed Jesus because of it, and we all know that Jesus never broke any Law.
"Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law." - Romans 13:10
Just as they accused Him of profaning the Sabbath when He actually wasn't.
They committed many other misinterpretations and violations of the Law.
"Because the carnal mind is enmity against God;
for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be." - Romans 8:7
But this all changes after Christ comes.
Then, we know that no one will be justified in the sight of God through works of the Law.
The Law served to convict people of their sin, and all who are under the Law is convicted by the Law as transgressors.
Therefore, if anyone is being convicted by the Law today is because they do not believe in Christ.
"And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin...
...because they do not believe in Me..." - John 16:8-9
Because if they were not under law they wouldn't have been convicted.
"But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His." - Romans 8:9
"He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked." - 1 John 2:6
The Law served to convict people of their sin, so that they could repent and receive Christ.
"for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the
bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God." - Hebrews 7:19
"...For if there had been a law given which could have given life,
truly righteousness would have been by the law." - Galatians 3:21
"For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes." - Romans 10:4
"...the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate,
for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane,
for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers..." - 1 Timothy 1:9
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." - 2 Corinthians 5:17
People under the Old Covenant were all slaves to sin just as lost people are today.
Then, why the Law was given?!
"For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law." - Romans 5:13
"Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith." - Galatians 3:24
"Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out,
so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord..." - Acts 3:19
The mistake some people make is to think that we cannot overcome sin. And that is not true.
In Christ we are made alive and we are free from the dominion of sin in our lives.
"For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace." - Romans 6:14
"For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one
jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled." - Matthew 5:18
"For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this:
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”" - Galatians 5:14
"Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law." - Romans 13:10
"Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love..." - Ephesians 5:1-2
"...Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.
...Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed." - John 8:34&36
What many do not understand is that God always wanted to heal us and to bring us to Him, so we could worship Him in spirit and truth.
"...I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." - John 10:10
"But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God,
you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life." - Romans 6:22
Blessings in Jesus' name!
There is a popular teaching that has been circulating in the church world for as long as I can remember. It goes like this.
"God gave the law of Moses with it's trillion laws (actually it can be any number made up for effect,
however much you can convince people is right) to show us how hopeless it is to try to keep it so we will know how much we need grace."
