A friend. God has been using me to teach her how to read. This is why I’ve been busy lately.

Maybe you should create a course for people with difficulty reading?

She is studying for MCAT, which is cream of the crop in reading comprehension. She must read a dense academic passage and then answer a handful of logical/hypothetical questions about it. Each passage with its handful of questions is considered one unit. MCAT has 9 units on a strict 90 minute deadline. That works out to 10 minutes per unit, which breaks down to 4 minutes reading and 60 seconds per question. Imagine reading a page from a textbook, grasping what it says in 4 minutes, and then acing a quiz in 6 minutes. Imagine doing that nine times in a row. And that’s just the reading part of MCAT! Then there’s a whole different section for physics, another section for chemistry, and another for biology. The exam is an all-day affair.
As you will notice in my photo, she got a perfect score in 11 minutes. She has to shave off another minute and then consistently perform well for 9 units in a row. She isn’t quite ready.
Even with God working for us to do a miracle, it’s an awful lot of work. There have been crying fits, mental breakdowns, headaches, and anxiety attacks. If she didn’t really want this, no amount of teaching from me would have helped. I love watching people grow and learn. But I can’t do it with everyone.
Today she texted me to show her progress on physics. Now that she can read and use her brain on a higher level, she’s understanding everything more thoroughly. She’s scheduled for MCAT in about three weeks.

I don't know how anyone who is illiterate can function in our society. If she were to fail on this attempt, will she be able to take the test over?

She could theoretically take it as many times as she wanted, but there comes a point when the schools start frowning on a lot of bad scores. She has basically failed it twice already before she learned how to read. There is no “failing score” but there is a score that is so bad it will keep you out of any decent school.
Tomorrow she will take a practice run to kind of put out a fleece. If she scores well enough on the practice, she will do it for real next week. Otherwise she will have to wait until probably Christmas break. She doesn’t want to do it a third time unless she is sure it will go better. Not just going better on one or two sections, but doing really well on the whole thing. You have to knock it out of the park on all four sections in one day.
