I have always struggled with understanding parables... my mind just doesn't think that way. I am reading in Luke 5:37 It's about the Wineskins.... nobody should pour new wine in old wineskins... Can someone tell me what exactly does this mean? I have my own idea but it's probably not correct.

I have my own idea but it's probably not correct. Or it is correct...
"for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you." - Matthew 10:20
"Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you..." - 2 Timothy 1:6
"...Do not be afraid; only believe." - Mark 5:36
Blessings!

Hi Dezi, the Lord's been showing me some things from the Parables lately, concerning the Kingdom of God. Wonderful Truth! He's led me to do some video teachings. I've covered five of them from Matthew's Gospel now, and Lord willing I'll continue on them again soon, and may get to the Parable of the Wineskins. Started a Parables of Jesus Thread in the Christian Video's forum - narrow-way-forums.freeforums.net/thread/1506/parables-jesusGod bless you and guide you as you seek His face.

The new wine is the new teachings of Christ. The old bottles represent the teachings and traditions of the law. These bottles are all too filled with the old wine (law) therefore they cannot hold any new teachings or it will spill out or burst the bottles ie upset their doctrine and nothing new can be retained.
In order for a new bottle to be given, a new heart has to be given. This was given to them after Jesus death and resurrection when his apostles received the holy spirit. Now everything falls into place whatever Jesus said and they can understand things of the spirit, ...the deeper meanings of his speech behind his examples.
This is for all of us also, and the beauty of the new testament, that we must come to Christ as a babe knowing nothing, and feed on his Word so that he can fill us up with the new law and write it on the heart. Any old beliefs and preconceptions we had must be erased to make room for the new wine. The old bottles must go or it cannot take the new wine.

old wineskins were made of some kind of leather. i have made wine before. gallons upon gallons. C02 gas (i think) is released. tiny bubbles. early on during the process there are a lot of bubbles. lots of people use balloons on the mouth of the bottle they make wine in and the balloon swells up and every so often you release pressure. they have some special made ones with a release valve for this in the wine making kits. even after its done and you strain it it will still make pressure. it can break glass bottles so a goat or sheep skin would for sure rip.

I used to make Water Kefir and Kombucha and the gas that would build up during fermentation is amazing. I never made wine but I imagine it would be the same if the pressure is not released. Back then they had wineskins, but today we have bottles. Either way it's something to hold the wine.
Now imagine that wineskin is what holds our beliefs. When it's already full of another teaching there's no room left to receive anything new and the vessel that holds it has grown worn and thin, ready to be thrown out. If you add new wine it's only going to spill out. There's no room, it's too full. It cannot be contained, ......and if the vessel is only half filled and there be a little room for the new wine, then the fermentation process will start again and the two strains will cause a reaction and burst the wineskin!
So if the old wine was so good then why does it need to be thrown out in the first place? Because it already served it's purpose and there is a new wine to taste. It's much better than the old wine and contains a new law of grace and mercy through Christ. It's a different way, a different mindset. It allows more freedom and doesn't condemn. It is patient with us, and gives more time to grow and learn from mistakes. It's not like the old wine where if you broke one law you are guilty of breaking the whole law. No, there's a new way to salvation and a better way which is more secure. It carries no burdens and has no faults. It doesn't grow old and worn, and can hold so much more of the Word of God.
Therefore a new wineskin is required to hold the new wine.
Sorry couldn't make this picture smaller.

Thank you so much Sister... your explanation was fantastic. I was thinking it was talking about the Old man and the New Man after Salvation. I am glad I asked...lol

i was making some wine once before i knew about the pressure build up and the metal top to the glass bottle all the sudden popped off and the lid went bouncing off the ceiling and floor and walls like crazy. I am glad it didnt hit anyone. and there was wine all over the ceiling and countertop and sink.

Spiritual things cannot be poured into an old and natural body. You must be born again, made a new creature to handle them. Spiritual things in the born again vessel will not only be preserved, but it will get better over time as old wine is better than new.

We spent a lot of time in the parables on Wednesday nights. It was the first Bible Study series we did. That might make for an interesting topic in the forums. I may see about doing that, most likely in the Gospels Section. Is that something you are still interested in Dezi?
