A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Jesus calls this a commandment, not a suggestion or a recommendation. We are to love one another as Jesus loved us. We know that Jesus loved us all the way to the cross. It is by our love for one another that people will know we are Jesus' disciples.
There is genuine love, and there can be an appearance of love. Many have learned how to fake this. They will hug you and tell you "I love you brother" or "I love you sister," and they do so long as they can get gain of you. If you cannot benefit them, you are cast aside. Jesus is speaking of genuine caring for the brethren. This is something that comes from God and you can't fake it by going through the motions. By genuine, God-given love will people know that we are the Lord's disciples.

And I would like to add that the love from God tells the truth and does not keep you deceived just to please you (if you understand me).
