I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me. Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

In each instance where the word repent was used, it comes from the Greek word metanoeo, and it means to think differently or afterwards, i.e. reconsider (mor. feel compunction) - Repent.
Compunction means a feeling of guilt or moral scruple that prevents or follows the doing of something bad.

Repentance is mentioned many times as a necessary thing in the Bible. Yes it is, and it is something that the devil hates. He hates to see anyone turn away from their sins to serve God with their whole heart. He is just fine with someone simply believing in Christ. The devil and the demons believe in the Lord, but Satan hates it when someone repents and finds forgiveness. That is why the devil has false prophets and teachers re-defining repentance to say it is nothing more than believing when they didn't used to believe. Many sinners who were never born again believe that Jesus is who He says He is, but they aren't sorry for their sins and choose not to serve the Lord.

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
James 2:14-26

The word repentance in the Bible literally means “the act of changing one’s mind.” True biblical repentance goes beyond remorse, regret, or feeling bad about one’s sin. It involves more than merely turning away from sin. Eerdmans Bible Dictionary includes this definition of repentance: “In its fullest sense it is a term for a complete change of orientation involving a judgment upon the past and a deliberate redirection for the future.”
In the Old Testament, repentance, or wholehearted turning to God, is a recurring theme in the message of the prophets. Repentance was demonstrated through rituals such as fasting, wearing sackcloth, sitting in ashes, wailing, and liturgical laments that expressed strong sorrow for sin. These rituals were supposed to be accompanied by authentic repentance, which involved a commitment to a renewed relationship with God, a walk of obedience to His Word, and right living. Often, however, these rituals merely represented remorse and a desire to escape the consequences of sin.
When the ancient prophets beckoned the people to repent and return, they were calling for a complete turnaround inspired from within the heart and will of the individual. The prophets called both the nation of Israel and individual people to surrender their lives, to turn away from a life ruled by sin to a relationship with God, the sovereign ruler over all: “Even now—this is the LORD’s declaration—turn to me with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Tear your hearts, not just your clothes, and return to the LORD your God. For he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in faithful love, and he relents from sending disaster” (Joel 2:12–13, CSB).
The theme of repentance continues in the New Testament, beginning with John the Baptist (Matthew 3:2) and then Jesus Christ (Matthew 4:17); both urgently called people to repent because the arrival of the Kingdom of God was at hand. Many chose this radical reorientation of their lives and demonstrated repentance through baptism (Mark 1:4) and profound changes in lifestyle and relationships (Luke 3:8–14).
Three Greek words used in the New Testament help us understand the full meaning of repentance in the Bible. The first is the verb metamelomai, which denotes a change of mind that produces regret or even remorse for wrongs done, but not necessarily a change of heart and action. This word is used in Matthew 27:3 to describe the guilt Judas felt over betraying Jesus.
The second verb, metanoeo, means “to change one’s mind and purpose, as the result of after knowledge.” This verb and its related noun, metanoia, denote true biblical repentance, which is characterized by four elements:
1) True repentance involves a sense of awareness of one’s own guilt, sinfulness, and helplessness (Psalm 51:4–10; 109:21–22).
2) True repentance apprehends or takes hold of God’s mercy in Jesus Christ (Psalm 51:1; 130:4).
3) True repentance means a change of attitude and action regarding sin. Hatred of sin turns the repentant person away from his or her sin to God (Psalm 119:128; Job 42:5–6; 2 Corinthians 7:10).
4) True repentance results in a radical and persistent pursuit of holy living, walking with God in obedience to His commands (2 Timothy 2:19–22; 1 Peter 1:16).
The focus of Jesus Christ’s mission was to call sinners to repentance: “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:32). His call of absolute surrender goes out to all people: “But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” (Luke 13:5). In His farewell to the disciples, Jesus commanded that they take His message of repentance and faith to all the nations (Luke 24:47).
Repentance in the Bible involves a complete and irreversible change of mind, heart, and actions. Repentance recognises that our sin is offensive to God. To repent means to make an about-face, heart-directed turn away from self to God, from the past to a future ruled by God’s commands, acknowledging that the Lord reigns supreme over one’s existence.

The word repentance in the Bible literally means “the act of changing one’s mind.”... “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins...” - Ephesians 2:1“that you put off, concerning your former conduct,
the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind...” - Ephesians 4:22-23“and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.” - Acts 15:9“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” - John 8:32

Many souls confuse sorrow and conviction with repentance . But they are simply the means of godly sorrow which leads one to REPENT Godly sorrow leads to repentance unto salvation . And let us notice paul used this example of godly sorrow ALSO as a means HE had done by the SPIRIT to cast a man out so that he would sorrow to repentance . CHA CHING . lots of folks don't get it . And this is WHY the early church saw sin as so ever deadly . For a man who serves sin , is only in dire danger , TILL and lest HE DO REPENT of that evil . But todays motto is , OH give it a rest , daddy god loves us regardless . INSTEAD of the mindset that paul , peter , james , john and CHRIST HIMSELF taught about and towards sin . THEIR MINDSET was , GO AND SIN NO MORE and let it not be once named among us as becometh saints . AND the pattern was , if one is in error , cause all correction necessary all godly sorrow in hopes it will lead that one in error to REPENTANCE . And now a word FROM one of the early ones . Peter said before all , and unto you first GOD , having RAISED UP HIS SON JESUS (notice that means AFTER HIS RESSURECTION )sent him to BLESS YOU in turning AWAY every one of you from his ..................INQUITIES . DO I mean JESUS came to set the captive free , YOU BETTER BELEIVE IT . Folks can and often tell me , DADDY PAPA GOD is MY HEARTS LOVE and JESUS IS MY HEARTS DESIRE and yet they walk in sin without NO CONVICTION . GUESS what , IT was never said YE shall know them by their words of mouth , BUT BY THEIR FRUITS . AND the FRUIT of the WICKED IS TO SIN . SO its quite simple to conclude , THEY FLAT OUT DONT KNOW HIM .

Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Acts 2:38,39

The guy at the other forum who was claiming murderers, rapist and thieves that never repent can go to heaven if they just believe in Jesus was talking about how the word repent isn't found in the book of John, so that is the gospel we need to give to "newbies." I don't see the logic in that. What difference does it make if the word repent is found in John's gospel if it is mentioned all throughout the New Testament and both by Jesus and John the Baptist?

I suppose it makes a difference if your objective is to try to deceive the "newbies." Give them only the portions of the Bible you want them to see. You are dealing with a heretic, and we all know who this person is. I am a little surprised he would be so bold as to say we should give "newbies" only the gospel of John so they wouldn't be exposed to the word repent! I know he doesn't believe anyone has to repent to be saved, which is absurd in itself, but to come out and say that is surprising.
