Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

That is so true. At night time, there is no way to miss the light coming from a city on a hill. You can see it from a great distance off. It makes no sense to light a candle and place it under a barrel. Not only will that prevent you from seeing the light, but with no oxygen, the candle will go out. Do we shine for Jesus, or has our light gone out?

Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

The purpose of a candle is to be a light. You want to get as much light as possible from a candle, so naturally, you wouldn't place it under a bed or under a bushel where it would not be seen, or as 777 suggested, might even be suffocated and go out. You would place it on a candlestick where it can do it's intended function.
Christians also serve to be a light in a very dark world. We are to be a good example of holiness and righteousness, representing God's Kingdom on earth. When we fail to do that, we are no more useful than a candle under a bushel or bed, or a flashlight turned upside down.

Something else Jesus tells us is that all those things that are hiding in the darkness will one day be revealed by the light of our Lord. Nothing is hidden that shall not be revealed.

and we know that GOD is LIGHT and in HIM is no darkness . But let not a man , woman or child , ever think once that HE DOES NOT KNOW NOR CAN SEE EVERYTHING that goes on EVERYWHERE . HE KNOWS EVERYTHING and NOTHING IS HID from the EYES of OUR LORD . Now put those hands up butero . You raise those hands and let us praise the LORD .
