What got me thinking about this is the strife that is caused by the OSAS doctrine. I was thinking about how it is so much more peaceful here simply because we don't spend all of our time debating it. At message boards that do not take an official position, this one doctrine takes over the whole place. We need to thank sister Candance for looking ahead and suggesting early on that we take a position to avoid the strife and becoming like WCF and other places where this controversy completely dominates everything. We know it came out of Calvinism, but it makes me wonder who actual created this belief that has caused such divisions. If we simply stop worrying about if you can or cannot lose salvation, and leave all judgement up to Jesus, and just preach the Bible as though OSAS never existed, imagine how much different things would be! You would eliminate the biggest area of contention that exists.
The same thing applies to other man-made doctrines. I was thinking about the controversy over pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation and post-tribulation rapture theories. What would it be like if man stopped worrying about this altogether and just believed that Jesus is going to return whenever the Father sends him? This division isn't as contentious as OSAS, but it still creates a controversy. I only mentioned these two issues because they are the ones that stand out the most, but I know there are others. Can you think of areas where men have created absolutes that go beyond what the Bible says and claim to know of a certainty they are right? They can be major or minor. One minor issue I can think of is that of why Cain's offering was rejected. The Bible never says, but it is taught that it was because it was not a blood sacrifice. I believe that is likely the case, but I can't say for sure, but others will teach it as though it was a fact.
