If I know the answers, I am happy to give them to you. If I don't, I am glad to look it up. I am not really that much of an expert on Bible Prophecy, so this trip through Revelation together should be a good experience for me. I have to look at it closer than ever before. I spend most of my time focusing on practical Bible teaching for day to day living because I feel like that is most needful, but with us living in the last of the last days, prophecy is becoming important to this generation.
Some say Magog is Russia and some others will say it is Turkey.
Well here is the actual scripture:
Eze 38:1-8 (1) And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, (2) Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, (3) And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: (4) And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: (5) Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: (6) Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee. (7) Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them. (8) After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
So it obviously seems to be talking about nations, and we see other nations that will be with them such as Persia (modern day Iran), Ethiopia and so on.
And when will this take place?
Eze 38:16 (16) And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
Well these nations shall come up against Israel in the latter days.
And of course God in some manor shall defeat them.
Now some prophecy teachers will mention Magog as being Turkey, and yet some other prophecy teachers , mention it as being Russia.
Here is a comment on this:
Set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog — We find, Gen_10:2, that the second son of Japhet was called Magog, but Ezekiel uses the word here as the name of the country of which Gog was prince: and Michaelis thinks that it denotes those vast regions to the north of India and China, which the Greeks called Scythia, and which we term Tartary. Houbigant also thinks that the prophet here means the Scythians, who are the descendants of Magog, the son of Japhet, and whose neighbours were the people of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal; that is, the Russians, Muscovites, and Tibareni, or Cappadocians; and thus Theodoret and Josephus understand it. The Turks are generally allowed to be of Scythian origin. Scythopolis and Hierapolis, which cities the Scythians took when they overcame Syria, were ever after by the Syrians called Magog: see Plin, 50. 5. c. 23....)
I will mention another comment from Grant Jeffrey at another time.
But for the most part it is either some of these nations either refer to Russia or Turkey, though in truth some of them may actually refer to both.
Here is a comment from Grant Jeffrey on this issue of Gog and Magog, and I find it is very well said and explained:
(...The Identification of Gog and Magog
Ezekiel 38;3 describes Gog as the leader of a confederacy of northern nations. Describe as a very strong leader, he will have the power to commit his allies to war. God will control Gog's mind and direct him to attack Israel (see Ezekiel 38;11). Gog will come from the land of Magog, a nation composed of three parts: Rosh, Meshsech and Tubal. Therefore the identification of the land of Magog is of great interest to prophecy scholars.
Studying genesis 10, scholars note that after the flood, Noah's descendants dispersed to various parts of Asia. Among then was Magog, a son of Japheth (see Gen 10:1-2). History indicates that Magog settled in what is now called the Caucasus region between the Black and Caspian Seas.
The Greeks called Magog's descendants "Scythians." While some of these Scythians moved farther north into Europe, others remained in Asia and emigrated as far as the Urals, becoming the ancestors of the Tartars, Cossacks, Mongols and others. Thus identifying Magog with this area of southwest Russia seems feasible....)
Now here is modern day information of were this Caucasus region is:
(...The Caucasus (Caucasia) is a region between the Black and Caspian Seas. It consists of Southern Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. Known for its alpine terrain, the Caucasus is home to Mount Elbrus, the highest mountain peak in Europe, on the Russo-Georgian border. The region is considered part of the natural boundary between Europe and Asia....)
Now here is another verse in this same chapter of Ezekiel, that mentions other groups that will be with Gog and his war against Israel:
Eze 38:6 (6) Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.
Who are these said to be?
Gomer, and all his bands,.... Or all his army, as the Targum. Gomer was the eldest son of Japheth, Gen_10:2, from whom descended the people called by the Greeks Galatians, or Galio-Grecians, as Josephus (i) says, who before were from him called Gomarians: others think that Phrygia, and the inhabitants of it, are meant; but, whether one or the other, they were both people of the lesser Asia, which is now in the hands of the Turks:
the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands; Togarmah was one of the sons of Gomer, Gen_10:3 whose posterity, according to the Greeks, as Josephus (k) says, were the Phrygians; but others rather think the Cappadocians descended from him; and that Togarmah designs their country, which also is a part of the Turkish dominions; See Gill on Eze_27:14. Several moderns, as Calmet (l) observes, believe that the children of Togarmah peopled Turcomania in Tartary, and Scythia, and which he approves of; and the Turks are mentioned by Ben Gorion (m) as one of the ten families of Togarmah. ...)
So we can see some mentioned as being the Turks (Gomer, Togarmah), and some mentioned as being Russia (Rosh, Meshsech and Tubal).
