I was reading in your threads about tongues, and am a bit confused. Is the Baptism in the Holy Ghost something you get in addition to being saved? I see that there is disagreement over whether or not all who get it speak in tongues, and I think I understand both sides. I don't understand why you need to pray in tongues, or why you need to speak in tongues and interpret? I don't understand why some want to speak in tongues and others do not? If it is something we need, why would someone not want it? If it is something we need to pray, shouldn't we all desire it, and why wouldn't God give it to us? I also don't get how we receive it? Is it just something that occurs on its own or do we need someone to lay hands on us or pray for us? Jesus did seem to put importance in it, so it seems like it is something to seek, or did this already happen and we just get it all when we get saved today?

I will try to help you Rejoice. The Baptism in the Holy Ghost is something you get after being saved, but not all receive the Baptism.
The reason why praying in tongues matters is the Spirit knows what we really need, and goes around our intellect.
In the case of tongues and interpretation, the Spirit will give out a message in another language, and that will require an interpreter. Why tongues? As a sign, so we know it is from God.
I don't know why someone wouldn't want everything available to us, so I can't answer that. If you see this as a gift, we should covet to have it.
The laying on of hands is the primary method, but not the only way. You can just be seeking God, and He can fill you.

Also, the Spirit can speak in angelic languages demons don't understand.

Rejoice, I really don't have much I can add to what was already said to you. I am sorry for any confusion. This is just one of those issues where everyone is not in full agreement.

I think so.
Tongues is a gift from God and not everyone can speak in tongues, but some denominations use the 'sign for speaking in tongues' as in "you are saved and baptised with the Holy Spirit' which causes some issues among other Christians who have not spoken in tongues, yet believe they are saved. I have been to one church and they preached the gospel and that was it, but they preached that we would be filled with the Holy Ghost and invited others to the alter. I went up a few times then finally brother layed hands on me and I could speak in tongues. I can't explain this because after a while I backslidded and fell to deep into sins I can't say. I have always doubted by salvation too, even after this experience because of verses like Matthew 7:21-23 and other verse in Hebrews that talk about falling away not being able to be renewed to repentance again. Today, I feel the Lord has brought me back. This is a very confusing topic for me. My mother could also speak in tongues and does sometimes when we pray together. But only she knows what her heart is praying to the Lord and I don't know. To me, I can't understant it. Honestly, I am a little discouraged when I hear others around me speak in tongues because I am a little jealous or envious like I lost it or I don't know. The Bible does say that 'speaking in tongues' is a sign for unbelievers not for believers, that where you see the gift of tongues speaking, there always unbelievers near. Also, if you speak tongues in church, it should have an interpretation or no one will be edified. That is said in the Corinthians. I think if a believer can speak in tongues that is great and a gift we should seek, Paul says to too.
If you just read the book of Acts for yourself and count the times you see speaking in tongues, this is a little clear. For example, not every instance of someone believing was a person who spoke in tongues, Acts 8:37 for example. and even Paul, but we know Paul did speak in tongues. The very first sermon where Peter delivers a sermon and thousands are saved, those were not speaking in tongues, but all were added to the church. That should clarify some of the confusion because I know the denominations who teach/preach that tongues are the 'sign of salvation' do not have scriptural proof like in the instances in Acts where we see believers who are believing and not speaking in tongues. There are a few instances of speaking in tongues in Acts. The house of Cornelius is one instance that was evidence that God accpeted the gentiles as well as Jews and was proof to Peter and the disciple Peter brought with him. This "verified" to the church and God poured out His Spirit on Gentiles and they spoke in tongues.
Perhaps they just don't know it's a gift that we can seek for? Perhaps they tried and felt like God didn't gift them with this? I would like to speak in tongues, but I don't know how and I pray for God's help don't know if this gift will be there for me. It's hard to understand for me.
I think we should desire it.
Who knows but we know we all dont' have the same gifts. Paul says that in the letters to the Corinthians.
hearing and believing the word of God. Like in the account of Cornelius in the book of Acts. Also laying hands. Acts is the authoritative text for me.
Jesus told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they were clothed wtih power from on high. Not necessarity 'tongues' but the desciples later pray for boldness to preach in Jesus' name to carry the gospel.
yes, Paul said I wish you could speak in tongues, but to desire the greater gift.
scripture seems to show us the it's a gift from God and when exactly this is received (tongues) or other gifts (gift not tongues) is hard to tell when exactly.
Dear God, please help us to find what You want and please fill us with Your Holy Spirit to do what You want. In Jesus' name. Amen.
