Just thought the following would be edifying to others here as well....it was a response to someone on another forum who was saying that no sheep can be lost because they are in the loving arms of the Shepherd, and unfortunately they were giving a wrong explanation which diluted and limited the Hebrews 6 warning against falling away, as well as misunderstanding the foreknowledge of God.
_____________________ God knows the END from the beginning......everything in between is a variable, so to speak, as far as we are concerned. Otherwise nobody could exercise their free will, and we would all put our feet up and adopt a fatalistic mindset thinking that there would be no need to even pray that souls would be saved or preach the gospel, or teach the word of God. In spite of the loving arms of the Shepherd, sheep still have a free will and can wander away from the sheepfold....remember Jesus talking about leaving the ninety nine to go rescue the one that got lost. We are in a war with a very real enemy (most often subtle and camouflaged) who keeps trying to get believers to wander, get deceived, or fall away entirely. The devil is prowling around like a roaring lion seeking who he may devour. This isn't over until it's over.
That passage in Hebrews is talking about those who fall away from the faith to the point of denying the one who saved them in their mind and heart....it's not talking about backsliding, it's talking about something worse and irrevocable.....changing one's mind and heart to the point of denying Christ and denying the faith. The Jews were under great pressure and persecution and apparently they were in danger of giving up the good fight entirely and changing their minds about following Christ to go back to Judaism. The same warning applies to any believer who might change their mind and heart about the faith and revert back to whatever they had believed and were doing before they knew the Lord. It IS possible to fall away, and we need to keep that warning upon our hearts....especially in time of tribulation....else we be tempted the same way those Hebrews were being tempted.
Since we are told that there WILL be a falling away in the last days and no doubt for much the same reasons of pressure and persecution....our faith will be tested greatly in the same manner as those Jews during the time of tribulation....so please I beg us all, let us not try to reason away the warnings in God's word, but take them to heart....they are a spiritual weapon and armour for our GOOD. Not an intellectual weapon, but a powerful and effective SPIRITUAL one, mighty in God, IF we would but take them to heart. The Lord is not being a big meanie and trying to threaten us......He is giving us AMMUNITION for the fight. So let's just humbly receive those warnings instead of resisting and fighting against our own side. Time to grow up and face the harsh realities of life, so to speak, because we are in very real war, and it's about to heat up.
Jas 1:12
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
Rev 2:10
Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

In the coming days the trials , persecutions and afflictions will greatly increase against the true lambs . Then they shall deliver you up , you will be betrayed , even killed , BUT he or she WHO ENDURES UNTO THE END , UNTO THE END , The SAME SHALL BE SAVED . To the final breath FOLLOW JESUS , being faithful unto all He did command and instruct others to do the same . I leave us with a warning from peter . SEEING YOU ALREADY KNOW THESE THINGS , YOU BETTER TAKE HEED , BEWARE , lest YOU also be taken in with the ERROR of the WICKED , FALL from your own steadfastness . Its a die daily battle . And it wont end , till our final breath . FOLLOW YE THE KING , and let none ever look back . You are loved sister . yep .

To the trenches , forward march without fear , FOR OUR LORD IS WITH US . BATTLE TIME . our weapons are spiritual , not carnal . Armour up , for the days coming will be filled with betrayal and persecution . But he or she who endures to the end , the same shall be saved . JESUS warned His own about all this . Now to the trenches , the lambs must fight as one against the lie and must point simply TO JESUS . We have HIM , we have the SPIRIT and we have our book the bible . Feast daily and be prepared to lose all . For in this world ye shall have tribulation , but be of GOOD CHEER , JESUS OVERCAME , in HIM , our faith IN HIM , WE OVERCOME . THE VICTORY BELONGS TO THE KING and the lambs shall have it . FORWARD march for what i say to you sister , i say to all , ITS BATTLE TIME .

IN JESUS ALONE is the VICTORY . all else is but the winds of vanity blown from the minds of men and from the inward bowels of ROME and the many . Its not a smell for any lamb . Battle time .

Believing false doctrine.....falling away from sound doctrine.....is not the same falling away that is implied in Hebrews 6 which is irrevocable. People can be restored from both false doctrine as well as from backsliding into sin. False doctrine of course brings perils and can lead astray, and deceive as well as lack the power that we need to keep our souls. But what I believe the Lord is particularly wanting us to see here is that trials (tribulation) can tempt believers to fall away from the faith and turn away from Christ completely....and that many will, sadly, turn away from Him irrevocably during the great tribulation that is coming (not just believe wrong doctrine).....exactly as those Hebrews were being tempted to do under heavy persecution. It's like Job was tempted under trial to curse God and 'die'. We need to be prepared for it....many are going to give up the fight in the time that is coming......and we need to be shored up and strengthened in the inner man against that temptation. oh help your people, Lord Jesus.

Those that could not be restored were not just people that backslid or committed intentional sins. They had turned away and resisted God so long, that the Spirit was no longer dealing with them. That is why they could not be restored, not because God was unwilling to forgive them if they repented. It was not someone like the prodigal. It went beyond that.

It seems that backsliding is not the falling away that is being addressed in Heb. 6. Believing false doctrine is not that falling away either. Both those things can contribute to or lead to falling away....but they are in and of themselves not this irrevocable falling away from Christ and reverting back to a condition of unbelief. Heb 6:4-6 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

I suppose it depends on what "if they fall away" means. Does that mean no longer believes, or does it mean falls away as the result of backsliding or continuous sin to the point of grieving the Holy Spirit away? The only thing I know is that a person can reach that point. I just do not think that if someone repents, God will refuse to forgive them. I tend to believe that they are so far gone, they no longer seek God. In that sense, you are right in saying it shows unbelief. It definitely shows lack of concern.
