I came across a question I thought strange, coming from a Christian. He wants to know why we read the Bible. I want to turn it around and ask why a Christian chooses not to read the Bible? It's the bread of life. If you're hungry, why do you eat? Let's break bread together, and partake of God's Word. Jesus said man shall not live by natural bread alone. What happens if you choose not to eat long enough? You'll get weak and die. Same thing applies here, but spiritually.

Well said brother. All manner of false teaching abounds in this world; I've heard it said that "God is not a book." Here's where the error of those who stalk the Lord's flock is manifest: all scripture is given by the inspiration of God, furnished to equip us for good works! The same Spirit of Christ leads us to the scriptures, instructing us in His ways which are higher than our own. We may test every spirit by the scriptures because God never lies... His words are eternal and stand forever. This is for our benefit so we might grow into workmen approved by the same Lord who speaks to us in His eternal word.
I can't fathom why anyone would question reading and searching the scriptures unless their motive for doing so is suspect, alien to the Spirit of God. The Lord keeps me rooted in His word... whatsoever He gives is in perfect harmony with the scriptures He preserved for us all.

I agree @walker. To read one person's words, their own thoughts are more reliable and edifying that the Bible. I wonder why this person has not written their own epistles, claimed they are the words of God for this people and started their own cult? Oh wait, a man named Joseph Smith did that once! He built a religion to himself. I suppose this person might get away with the same thing? People are so foolish today. They actually think they are so spiritual, the very thoughts they have are all God-breathed, while the Bible has error.

I really don't want anyone to add to or change the Bible and start their own cult, but those putting their own thoughts above Holy Scripture and teach their thoughts are doing that already.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God...” - 1 John 4:1

That's one of the fruits of the false: an avoidance of scripture and/or the mangling of God's words with "hermeneutics," zeroing in on part of a passage deriving special meanings from word plays. I've witnessed entire doctrines erected in such a way!
This is what the serpent did in the Garden when he deceived Eve: he played with God's words.
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 1:9)

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God...” - 1 John 4:1 I hope you're right, and it wasn't to downplay the importance of reading the Bible.

False teachers love to pervert the Bible claiming to use hermeneutics. I believe John knows how it is to debate with people who says:
You are ignoring the laws of hermeneutics.
“But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” - Galatians 5:18
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free,
and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” - Galatians 5:1
We are free! Glory to God! \o/
