Something else that will hiss are cats if you back them into an uncomfortable situation. We have had kittens around the house, and they will hiss and even spit at you if you mess with them if they are scared. I had to pick one little one up that had wandered off into the street, and bring it back to where it would be safe, and he was hissing and spitting. It is kind of funny when they are real little like that.
