Many people use this verse to justify why they are still (willfully) sinning everyday:
❝If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.❞ - 1 John 1:8
But what does it really mean?!
It really means that I must commit a sin here and there just to say that I still have some sin?!
❝...Certainly not!❞ - Romans 6:15
Then what does it really mean?!
First, let us remember of what Jesus said:
❝...go and sin no more.❞ - John 8:11
Jesus said ❝go and sin no more❞ to the woman who was caught in adultery.
Now, if that same woman obeyed what Jesus said and ceased to practice sin will that make her without sin?
The answer is NO. And why?
The answer is obvious: Because she already sinned in the past.
Then, even if that same woman started to walk a sinless life from that moment she would still have sins because of her past.
She would be lying if she said she had no sin, but she wouldn't be lying if she said she stopped sinning.
And I believe we all agree that we all have sinned in some point in our lives (all, except Jesus).
And now Jesus command us:
Go and sin no more.
❝For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.❞ - Romans 6:14
This verse:
❝If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.❞ - 1 John 1:8
It was for those who were seeking to be justified through the law, as they thought they were without sin after doing a sacrifice (as in the law).
❝For then would they not have ceased to be offered?
For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins.
But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.❞ - Hebrews 10:2-3
❝Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.❞ - John 8:36
Then, this is what I have to say to you today:
Do not be afraid of walking away from sin. It is what you must do through Christ. As it is written:
❝I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.❞ - Philippians 4:13
❝...since you have put off the old man with his deeds...❞ - Colossians 3:9
❝...it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me;
and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God,
who loved me and gave Himself for me.❞ - Galatians 2:20
And if Christ really is living in me, does it mean I still have to be walking desiring to sin?!
Certainly not, because Jesus did not sin.
❝He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.❞ - 1 John 2:6
❝I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.❞ - Galatians 5:16
❝I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.❞ - 3 John 1:4
❝I say then: Walk in the Spirit...❞ - Galatians 5:16
❝...because the Spirit is truth.❞ - 1 John 5:6
May the Lord bless you in Jesus' name!
