I was thinking about these two men, in light of the essay I wrote on Matthias. Earlier, I was thinking about what an honor it would have been to have been chosen to be one of the 12 Apostles. In Matthias case, he was the replacement for Judas Iscariot. At the same time, what would it have been like to be the runner up, the man who almost became one of the 12?
I recognize that just serving Jesus and being able to be associated with Him is an honor. I personally do not know what kind of position I might have in the Kingdom of God, but I would be thankful to serve the Lord in any capacity. Still, there is something special about being among the 12! It is an eternal appointment. We talk about life time appointments to the Supreme Court in this land, but this is an eternal appointment. Nobody will ever take it away from these men. Matthias became the replacement for Judas Iscariot, after the lot fell on him, but it had to be disappointing to be the man who was one step away, but not chosen.
Do not get me wrong. God makes no mistakes, and the other Apostles prayed for God to give them a perfect lot, and I believe the right man got the position. God would not allow a mistake in something like that, but I think of all the runner ups I have seen in competitions over things like beauty pageants and things of this world that have no lasting value, and being runner up to be one of the 12 Apostles.
My feeling is that Barsabas was a man of great character, and was humbled and honored just to serve the Lord, and to even be considered for that place, but I still know it had to be a disappointment not to have been picked. The one thing I would take from this is that no matter what our place of service, from what man considers the lowest office, to what men see as the greatest positions, just know that serving Jesus in any capacity is the greatest of honors.
