Now, we will look at Jesus' 3rd charge against the religious leaders. Matthew 23:13
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
The religious leaders rejected God's only method of salvation, and God's only way to gain entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven. If you did happen to take a stand for Jesus Christ, you were likely put out of the Synagogue. As such, they refused to go into the Kingdom of Heaven, and they worked to prevent others from being saved.
CHARGE 3: They Openly Opposed God's Way Of Salvation, Faith In Christ.
But woe unto ye Rome and others . Hypocrites . YE shut up the kingdom heaven by saying many paths , ye have not entered in and ye do not allow any to enter in . ye preach Catholic church and inclusive lies as the means to enter the KINGDOM .

Now we come to the 4th issue Jesus had with the religious leaders of His day. Matthew 23:14
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
4TH CHARGE AGAINST THEM: They were thieves that cheated widows. Woe unto you Rome and daughters of her . For ye heap an steep up treasure and for a pretense ye preach redist of wealth .

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
CHARGE 5: They Were False Teachers
Most people do not think of the religious leaders of Jesus' day as traveling around trying to make others believe as they do, but apparently, they were doing just that.
Woe unto rome and all false teachers . ye compass land and sea , on planes and jets , to make proselytes of men . ye preach lies and make all your converts slaves to your greed and empire and make them twice fold the child of hell .

Luk 6:7-11 (7) And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. (8) But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. (9) Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? (10) And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. (11) And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.
Now concerning the old testament sabbath, there was no law that said no one could be healed on the sabbath, so the pharisees also added laws to God's law.

(11) And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. Now concerning the old testament sabbath, there was no law that said no one could be healed on the sabbath, so the pharisees also added laws to God's law. They did have things they observed, traditions, that were beyond what the Law of Moses required, and in some cases, they created traditions that made God's laws of none effect, loopholes. In this instance, they were just making up something to accuse Jesus. How many times did the religious crowd encounter any healing ministry before the Lord showed up? They just found a way to make it appear Jesus was breaking a law, but they really knew better.
People still do that sort of thing today. I have encountered it personally. You have violated no rules, so they twist your words to make it appear you did so they can falsely accuse you. As such, they are behaving more like the Pharisees than those they accuse of being a Pharisee.

Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; Making the word of God of none effect through your traditions, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. Mark 7:6-13
I do not think the main issue here was that they washed pots and cups. That was not harming anyone, but the point Jesus was making is that they placed more value on traditions than the actual law of Moses they were supposed to be teaching. They would make the traditions supersede the actual laws of God.

JESUS was saying something to these folks . They scrubbed them pots clean , BUT HOW CLEAN WERE THEY ON THE INSIDE . THEY LOVED the praise of men . THAT IS SIN . and they said DO THIS , and yet they had whores at the entrance of doors that some of them often slept with . ITS LIKE ME SAYING , BUTERO You better not watch porn and yet all the while , i am sleeping around with a temple prostitue . THEY WALKED IN SIN . YET JUDGED OTHERS IN SIN . THEY WERE BLIND AS BLIND CAN BE . PAUL knew it too . HE knew what the jews did . HE even said , YOU who are a jew and rest in the law , and judge those , YET YOU DO the same things . YEP . paul knew what was going on . ITS CALLED HYPROCRISY . and JESUS KNEW IT . TODAY THE VERY ones who accuse us of legalism , THEY THE PHARISEE . yet they say we are . But if their faith was truly in JESUS , why do they attack folks who say BE YE HEARERS and DOERS . they the modern day pharisee . THEY the ones peter warned of and others did . THAT cannot cease from sin , and beguile unstable souls with an ACROYNM . THEY THE LOST ONES . THEY ARE . I GAURANTEE IT . I GAURANTEE IT .

Lot of good stuff in this post, I am glad you took the time to point out the scriptures on the pharisees John, and what Jesus was really speaking against.
And it is true that the saying of legalism does not appear in the bible, and the way most people today use this saying is in a big way, so to justify something they like, or to make an excuse to not obey biblical truth, and really it is not so to stand on biblical truth.
Although there are others, who tend to use this saying in a different way, to were they mention the pharisees as being legalists, in the sense because they added to God's law, and this they surely did do.
It is said they had many, many additional laws, and the bible does show some of this.
Such as this no healing on the sabbath thing, and adding extra biblical laws to God's laws.
Now is it proper to call adding to God's law legalism?
Well I guess that is a question that can be talked about.
One thing I do know is that often times when someone takes away from the word, and makes sin acceptable, they can tend to be labeled as liberalists, which that is what the seeker sensitive do, and the ecumenical movement does.
I know one thing is that they do not preach true liberality in Christ, but a false type of liberality.

HE told the galations . ONLY USE NOT your LIBERTY as an occasion to serve the flesh . AKA , DONT USE LIBERTY as an excuse TO SIN . PEROID . I gaurantee that is what paul meant . FOR GOD will not be mocked , he says a few lines down . IF YOU serve , walk after flesh , aka live in sin , THEN YE WILL REAP CORRUPTOIN . NOT LIFE BUT if ye SOW , aka HEED AND DO , as the SPIRIT bids , ye shall reap life everlasting . Today is sept fourth ...........right . TODAY I DECLARE WAR on the false legalism , the false liberty , on acroynms and all false precepts of men .
