I exhort therefore that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
This is an area that I admit I fall short, praying for those in authorities. Still, this is something we are exhorted to do. There are different reasons why I don't do this as I should. When I am praying, I tend to put the emphasis first on those I know personally, like family and friends. We all live such busy lives, remembering to pray for those in government is easy to forget, but it is important. Why is that? The Bible says that "we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty." It is naturally to our advantage to have people in government that are not anti-Christian.
What kind of prayers can we pray to help us live a quiet and peaceable life? We naturally would be in a better place if our leaders were born again Christians, so I would say we should pray first and foremost for the saving of those who rule over our nation, whatever country that may be. If we have a leader that is already saved, then we need to pray that they have good advisors, and that the Lord will grant them wisdom to rule over the people in righteousness. In America, judges hold a lot of authority, (too much if you ask me), so it is important that we pray for them.
I admit, this is a difficult thing to do at times, especially when we have leaders that are evil, and we wish would just go away. I felt like that when Obama was President. But we need to remember to pray for everyone in positions of authority. Even people that are not following God are not out of the reach of his hand.
I have just made an additional note to my prayer request list to start praying for those who are in positions of authority. I know that without writing it down, I will soon forget. The Lord has commissioned me to preach the whole counsel of the Word of God, and that includes areas where I fall short. I need to hear it along with everyone else, so that is what I am doing.
I welcome any input you may have on this topic, not only on the need to pray for those in positions of authority, but things we should pray on their behalf.
