Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. (John 17:17)
The word of God is the truth that sanctifies us practically; not just the hearing of and agreeing with it, but the applying of it to our lives. (What good is it to read what the New Testament teaches but not actually apply those teachings and commands to your life?)
It is by the studying of His truth that God renews our minds to know what He is like and what is pleasing to Him and what is not; and by the faithful application of His doctrine to our lives He also increases and strengthens in us His own attitudes and desires.
And so, by doing this (faithfully studying and applying the word), we are built up by God in our personal faith (which agrees with and reflects the teachings of the Christian faith), strengthened in the knowledge of Him and of His ways against deception; strengthened against the temptations of the world and of the flesh by having our mind renewed by God through obedience to His word so that we find those things repugnant and no longer tempting as they once were; becoming more like Jesus Christ in our attitudes, and honoring God in our behavior by following His written instructions and the guiding personal conviction of His Spirit, which is the ongoing work in us and the increasing fruit from us that God desires, and does, and cultivates with us.
And by that faithfulness and fruitfulness, we ensure that we do keep ourselves in the love of God, as we look forward to the mercy of God that will change us to perfection and bring us safely through the fire by which this earth will be destroyed on the day of our Lord's return.
But ye beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. (Jude 20,21)
Peter said in long what Jude said in short:
For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.
Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:5-11)
