And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. Acts 2:17,18
These verses are not speaking about some future event, but it is speaking of an event that took place almost 2000 years ago on the day of Pentecost. Peter said that the baptism of the Holy Ghost that took place in the upper room on that day was a fulfillment of this prophesy from Joel, which means that the last days had already begun. A day is as a thousand years with the Lord and a thousand years is as a day. Ever since that time, God has been speaking to his people through dreams and visions and prophetic words. There is nothing in the Bible that would indicate this has ever ceased. This brings with it an awesome responsibility, and that is, to speak only what God gives you to speak. If you have a dream, tell it. If you have a vision, speak it. If you have a word from God, share it, but make sure it is really the words of the Lord, rather than your own imagination. If you have an interpretation, and you aren't sure about it, feel free to share, but let it be known that you are unsure of the meaning.
I believe very strongly that the gifts are still in operation today. I believe God still speaks to his church, if we are willing to listen, but I also know there are many voices out there that are blatantly false. There are more false prophets than true prophets, so we need to beware. Measure everything by the Bible, and if the word you are hearing cannot be confirmed that way because it is to you or a congregation or a city or country today, observe it, but do so with caution. See if the words come to pass. If they don't, the person that gave the prophecy is a false prophet. If it comes to pass, they were likely the words of God, but even then, use caution. As Frienduff has pointed out numerous times, as well as others, there are false manifestations. Sister Candance pointed that out as well, so if the thing comes to pass, but the messenger is telling us to worship anyone besides the God of the Bible, they are false. Do not listen to them.
We have to be careful here. Don't despise prophesying. We should be thankful to hear from God. The Bible speaks of days where there is a famine in the land, not of bread or of water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. We don't want to reject genuine words of prophecy, but we need to be cautious. We have been in the last days for nearly 2000 years, and I believe we are in the last of the last days now. Time is short, so the false words, false manifestations, false teachers and false prophets will only increase, in order to deceive us. Know your Bible. Know the people you are looking to for instructions. Take heed to yourselves, because it is your soul that is at stake, and you are the one that will have to answer to God for what you do in this life. You won't be able to blame others for your failures.
