I have heard this most of my life and in studying the bible God says nothing of the
sort. In fact two verses come to mind which blow this lie out of the water.
1. John 14:13
And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
2. John 15:7
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Common sense should show here that if you can help yourselves why would you ever ask God for help.
This would kind of steer you to believe that you are a God yourself and that's a lie.
That particular quote came from Benjamin Franklin. You know the guy with the key and the kite.
He's wasn't a God.
So the moral of the story is God helps everyone who asks in his name and believes in his word.
Thank you and God bless.

Agree with your point. God told Moses to "Be STILL and know that I am God"....we don't tend to learn how to become still and rely on the Lord until we get to the end of our self-effort and we've run out of options. It's in our weakness His strength is made perfect. (Although I'm guessing maybe Benjamin Franklin might have meant what he said in an "If a man will not work he will not eat" kind of way.)
