Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord."
What does that verse mean to you? I know of two Denominations that use this verse to supposedly show that we aren't to use instruments in New Testament churches. I have seen some churches turn to the Psalms in the Bible, put a melody to them and sing them. Many praise and worship songs were taken largely from the Psalms.
What are your thoughts on this? How do we practice it? Do we do as David did, and create our own Psalms of praise? Do we meditate only on the 150 Psalms in the canon of scripture? What does it mean to sing and make melody in your heart to the Lord?

It means to be speaking to one another , with psalms , to be singing songs with one another . We can use all instruments of song to praise Him. Speaking , making melody with one another to the Lord .

I know some misinterpret that to mean no instruments of praise . but man that contradicts the very pslams they are to be speaking to one another with. It said pslams . and if we read in the psalms, how often it makes mention of praising him on instruments , drums, the ten stringed etc, trumpets . If people would slow down and test their teachers by SOUND doctrine . So much error would be cast aside fast . Ponder that butero. They read that and it says In PSLAMS and making song YET pslams contain pratices WITH INSTRUMENTS . see how simple it really is IF we follow CHRIST . SO simple to see.

Using instruments is a way of giving praise unto the Lord. It makes no sense at all to say we should speak to ourselves in Psalms, yet we are not to have musical instruments to praise God in church, when the psalms say we should. Something else I was thinking about was how we can praise God in psalms, using our own words. I believe in praising God through the book of Psalms, but how much better to give praise to the Lord in our own words! That is one thing I have noticed you do quite often. You don't call it a Psalm, but you do give praise to the Lord in your own words, just as the psalmist does. When you look up the definition of the word translated psalm, it is psalmos, and it means a sacred song, sung to musical accompaniment. This makes sense, when you notice some of the headers over many of the psalms. Here are a few examples. To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm of David. To the chief Musician upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David. These are quite common in the Book of Psalms. I mentioned that there are churches today that put the psalms to music and sing them, just as other churches sing from a traditional Hymn Book. We know the Lord inhabits the praises of his people. The main thing is to give God the praise and honor and glory that is due unto him, regardless of how we do it.

...but how much better to give praise to the Lord in our own words! That is one thing I have noticed you do quite often. It is in spirit. It is nice to repeat and sing a music you already know...
But when you are inspired and more connected in spirit with the Lord, you may praise Him in ways you never did.
And that is far more personal.
God bless you in Jesus' name!

What does it mean to sing and make melody in your heart to the Lord? I think this verse is giving freedom in the Lord to do what we would want to do anyway in His presence. Sometimes I will sing in tongues or just with my own words, prayer and praise, only singing the words in a musical tone instead of just saying them. I've been in meetings where the Holy Spirit orchestrates everyone in a "new song" and it is quite beautiful and intimate worship. I'm not sure if I know what is meant by "in your heart"....perhaps we don't always feel like singing out loud, I have found sometimes I want to be silent in His presence, and just listen to the music and the others singing, so I'm just joining in with my heart at those times...when the heart is full the mouth is sometimes silent. As frienduff said, I believe musical instruments are quite biblical. Music has a way of opening the heart to the Lord....because He inhabits the praises of His people.....it refreshes the soul when we come into His presence that way.

The main thing is to give God the praise and honor and glory that is due unto him, regardless of how we do it. We should also keep REVERENCE in mind with regard to worship. This is something I have seen that many Christians seem to have a poor concept of. I'm not suggesting that every hymn needs to sound like a dirge, but the Holy Spirit is NOT a rock star, a pop star or a rap star, and all music is not acceptable for worship, regardless of whether Jesus is mentioned or praised in it. This is not one of those things you can explain to people whom God has not given the understanding of it, as one can't point to the Scriptures and say, 'See here, it says no rock or rap music or pop for worship!' It's one of those things that is a matter of spiritual discernment and maturity, knowing what is acceptable and what is not acceptable and pleasing to God, which only He can give a person. It's a matter of creating and maintaining the spirit of reverence and true worship in holiness; and worldly music clashes with that spirit and is offensive to the Spirit of God and to the mind of the man who knows Him well; just like taking worldly activities of various kinds and 'Christianizing' them is. Slapping Jesus' name on something DOESN'T make it of Him or honoring to Him. Can you imagine people doing the hokey pokey for Jesus? Square-dancing? Break dancing? Doing the limbo? The bunny hop? The electric slide? The chicken polka? It wouldn't surprise me in the least if there are people doing it somewhere. And it's irreverent and ludicrous. I remember, some foolish person long ago put the hymn "Amazing Grace" to the tune of "The House Of The Rising Sun"---a rock song about a whorehouse; and they probably thought they were clever in doing it. Utterly outrageous. Yes, David danced with joy before the Lord, and I've done this myself a few times (even though I can't dance!), but he was not dancing in an irreverent or unholy way or the Lord would most certainly not have been pleased with it. ...Let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire. (Hebrews 12:28,29) Instruments can be used in a reverent way, and hymns and psalms and spiritual songs can be joyful, even lively; but there is a line between the reverent and the irreverent, between the sacred and the profane, and God is the one who makes known to us what that is, so that we don't go too far, and so that demons don't take over. And what is and is not acceptable music for worship, like so many other things, requires a degree of discernment and an understanding of holiness that many Christians apparently do not have.

SING TO THE LORD
Unto my King I will joyfully bring--- from the music that wells in my heart--- melodies from above--- hymns of worship and love--- as the Spirit inspires and imparts:
I will lift up my voice; in the Lord I rejoice: With my mouth and my hands and my heart and my soul will I praise and rejoice in the Lord!
Sweet to His ears are our praises to hear--- like the fragrance of cassia or myrrh... How much sweeter is He than the incense to me: The aroma of heaven to earth!
I will lift up my voice; in the Lord I rejoice: With my mouth and my hands and my heart and my soul will I praise and rejoice in the Lord!
(The Lord is near; He will dry ev'ry tear; all our sorrows forgotten will be... Not a pain can compare with the joy we will share when the face of our Savior we see!)
Rejoice in hope, to the sound of the harp, to the song of the flute and the strings! (Better instruments yet than the bow or the fret, are the tongues of the righteous who sing!)
Praises sound forth, from the south to the north--- from the shores to the ends of the world! When from earth we have gone, we shall take up our song in the courts of the house of the Lord!
We will sing with one voice; at His throne we'll rejoice, with our mouths and our hands and our hearts and our souls--- with our mouths and our hands and our hearts and our souls--- for His name we exalt, and His deeds we extol--- we will praise and rejoice in the Lord!

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness........in simplicity and not the spirit of the world. David wasn't dancing to impress, he was just expressing his joy and love to the Lord....so happy to have the ark back and be in the presence of God, of which the ark represented God's presence with them.

I like Pentecostal style worship, like you would find at Jimmy Swaggart's church, but when it comes to Christian rock and rap, that doesn't belong in the house of God.

A favourite song of mine by Johny Cash.
And I heard as it were the noise of thunder. One of the four beasts saying "come and see" and I saw, and behold a white horse. There's a man going around taking names And he decides who to free and who to blame. Everybody won't be treated all the same. There will be a golden ladder reaching downWhen the man comes around. The hairs on your arm will stand up At the terror in each sip and in each sup. Will you partake of that last offered cup? Or disappear into the potter's ground. When the man comes around?
Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singing. Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum. Voices calling and voices crying Some are born and some are dying. It's Alpha and Omega's kingdom come. And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree The virgins are all trimming their wicks. The whirlwind is in the thorn treeIt's hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 'Til Armageddon, no shalam, no shalom. Then the father hen will call his chickens home The wise man will bow down before the throne. And at his feet, they'll cast the golden crowns When the man comes around.
Whoever is unjust, let him be unjust still. Whoever is righteous, let him be righteous still. Whoever is filthy, let him be filthy still. Listen to the words long written downWhen the man comes around. The whirlwind is in the thorn tree It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks. In measured hundred weight and penny pound When the man comes around.
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts and I looked and behold, a pale horse. And his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.

By the sound of it, Johnny Cash had been doing some reading, but sadly he couldn't bring himself to part from the world.
