Rest in David
Here is a certain scripture that speaks of David:
Heb 4:7 (7) Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Now this thing about today hearing his voice, is mentioned in the Old Testament.
Now when it is mentioned in the Old testament, was there a twofold meaning to this scripture?
Now we know it does point to the New Covenant, through Christ purchasing salvation for us, through his death and resurrection, and finally sending back the Holy Ghost.
So if you hear his voice, today, and ever since the new testament church was born, you need to be taking heed, and it is in Christ, that there is rest.
And of course throughout time, people needed to listen to God, but in the case of the psalms verses, it was more specific to a type rest, they could experience in David's time, if they would just enter into this certain thing in God, but it also pointed to the final rest people could experience through the cross of Christ.
So what was this rest they could experience to some degree, in David's time ?
Well I will mention here, some of the verses:
Psa 95:7-9 (7) For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, (8) Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: (9) When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.
Psa 95:10-11 (10) Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: (11) Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.
David was saying today, in his time, to not harden their hearts.
Yes it did point to the new covenant time's but also to something they could experience then.
What was it, that could enable them to enter into some type of rest in David's time ?
Now we know that Moses did not enter the promise land and did not experience the rest from the enemies, that Joshua experienced, but also David also did experience a type of rest.
Read the beginning of Psalms chapter 95, real carefully.

Simple trust in GOD . Our peace comes of Christ . Imagine having a mind that did not fear man , did not fear death had joy and hope and abundance of life , cause that mind simply trusted in GOD . This is the true rest , true peace. For in this world persecutions , afflictions , offences will be . But even in prison and under threat of death i seen in the writings of the bible those apostels had peace . In this world ye shall have tribulation . BUT BE O GOOD CHEER JESUS has overcome the world . IN HE IS OUR PEACE , IN HE is our rest . And by the SPIRIT the lambs can do the things pleasing in His sight and every word of the LORD works GOOD to the soul of those who love Him .

Yes he is our rest and has always been the one to run to, whether in our day or David's, but there is a specific thing mention in that psalms scripture, and it is clearly mentioned, so what can that be ? I am looking for an exact thing that is mentioned in those verses. And yes it would follow things such as trusting in God.

Let us go to these scriptures:
Psa 95:1-11 (1) O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. (2) Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. (3) For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. (4) In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. (5) The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (6) O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker. (7) For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, (8) Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: (9) When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work. (10) Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: (11) Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

Its all about having faith in GOD . They did not enter in due to unbelief . God had told them to go into the land they sent out men to search it . GOD had promised them the land , yet they were afraid of the men of the land . THIER faith and trust was not in GOD . That is why they wandered for forty years . TILL the men and women above forty died in the wilderness . THEY had not faith in God . They did not truly believe . They could not enter in due to their unbelief .

That is true concerning the wilderness experience, and only Joshua and Caleb entered the promise land, and the younger generation of course, and of course they had faith, and also we enter into a greater rest today, under the new covenant, as we place our faith in God. But concerning the psalms scripture, yes there was a prophetic aspect to it, which points to the new covenant, but what was David saying to the people of his day? He said:" Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness". He was saying to the people of his day to not harden their hearts, as the Israelite's of old, had hardened their hearts in Moses' time. David wanted the people to enter into a rest in his time, which required faith, what was that rest ? What was he trying to stir up the people to do ? Psa 95:1-11 (1) O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. (2) Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. (3) For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. He was trying to stir them up to enter into worship and in worship there is rest, and even greater under the new covenant of course.

So we mentioned 3 types of rest, that they had under the old covenant, which was rest from their physical enemies through Joshua, a Sabbath day of rest, mentioned in the 10 commandments, and rest through worship, which David was greatly used of God in the realm of worship.
And we see hints of these being used in the book of Hebrews:
Rest from physical enemies
Heb 4:2 (2) For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
This was both referring to the gospel under the new covenant, and the promise God gave to the Israelites during the time of Moses, and today we enter into his rest, through faith in his finished work, and then , for them to get rest from their enemies, and enter the promised land, they had to enter by faith.
Here is a bit of background to this:
Heb 3:15-18 (15) While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. (16) For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. (17) But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? (18) And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
So here is reference to Moses' time.
Sabbath day of rest
Heb 4:4-5 (4) For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. (5) And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.
Under the old covenant they had the 7th day sabbath, and God is using this as an example, for us to put our faith in God, and rest in him.
And Hebrews also mentions David:
Rest in worship
Heb 4:7 (7) Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
We seen that in the book of psalms, that David was seeking to stir the Israelites to enter into the then rest, through worship, and it was to be entered into by faith.
And of course now it is to put our faith in Christ and his finished work, and even today, in the realm of worship, it needs to be done through faith that is mixed with the love of God.
In fact it has always been faith in Christ, which under the Old covenant, they were looking towards the first coming of Christ, and under the New covenant, we look back to the cross of Christ.
Do what depth do we realise, what faith in Christ actually is ?
Now that is a question to meditate on.
