The battle of flesh against the Spirit is constant, and exercising self control is very, very important.
Learning how to win against the flesh by the Spirit is very important and the more we exercise it, the easier it will become.
"For if you live according to the flesh you will die;
but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." - Romans 8:13
Firstly, you have to be willing to overcome. And you must believe it is possible.
"...because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." - 1 John 4:4
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13
And you must watch against evil desires from the flesh or evil spirits.
Whenever you notice your sinful nature or evil spirits wants to have a place, then it is time to counter attack by the Spirit.
Example:
When you see something and it triggers one of your weakness; let us say envy.
Envy is evil and it must not prevail, then you desire by the Spirit to overcome that evil desire.
There are many ways you can overcome by the Spirit, and all of them require faith.
1. You can remember and believe a truth, you have to believe and desire it to be effective.
Example:
You remember of some Scripture that encourages you to flee from evil.
2. You can call on the name of the Lord Jesus by faith and ask Him what you desire to be done regarding that evil desire.
"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will
ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you." - John 15:7
"And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do,
that the Father may be glorified in the Son." - John 14:13
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see
your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:16
3. Prophetic utterance.
This is similar to calling on the name of the Lord Jesus but it can include singing songs that...
will uplift you spiritually, or by an act of faith that will make the fruits of the Spirit to take place.
"...Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain,
‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes
that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says." - Mark 11:22-23
"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." - Romans 12:21
4. Prayer.
The power of prayer done in confidence! It is powerful and can make your mind change focus faster.
"And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know
that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him." - 1 John 5:15
"...The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." - James 5:16
"Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray,
believe that you receive them, and you will have them." - Mark 11:24
"You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures." - James 4:3
This means that, if you ask anything that will help you to do God's will then you will certainly receive it!
Or if you ask anything according to God's will, you will receive it!
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication,
with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God,
which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7
"And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do.
For they think that they will be heard for their many words." - Matthew 6:7
"Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows
the things you have need of before you ask Him." - Matthew 6:8
"Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty
hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time..." - 1 Peter 5:6
And you have to be vigilant, do not wait too much to take a position against any evil.
As soon as the Spirit alerts you that evil is at the door, then the faster you act the easier it will be.
Because when once the evil has reached your mind and dominated it significantly, it can take much more time and persevarance for it to flee from you.
Then, time is precious, do not waste it on evil. Use your time to do good, flee from evil.
"Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life." - Proverbs 4:23
And that is how you can grow spiritually, the more you practice it the stronger you will become.
And you soon you will see yourself in much less trouble and wars against the flesh and evil spirits.
"I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh." - Galatians 5:16
"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." - James 4:7
That's it! Let us be submissive to God as much as possible. It is much better, right?!
"Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." - Ephesians 6:11
"Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able
to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." - Ephesians 6:13
"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all
perseverance and supplication for all the saints..." - Ephesians 6:17-18
Blessings to you all in Jesus' name!
