Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. — Matthew 7:14
Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. — Proverbs 4:26-27
Most times you hear these verses in relation to the wicked world around us. We are outnumbered and accosted from every side. This is true! Yet, there may be more than one layer to this.
The thing about a narow path is that it’s wide enough for one person at a time. Single file! Each of us must walk in our calling, with the Holy Spirit as our guide. It is up to us as individuals to stay on the path. Other Christians can give us wise counsel, but no one can hold our hand as a babysitter. No one can walk the exact same life as us. We’re on a narrow path, no room for extra people. Don’t be surprised if you often feel alone, unnoticed, isolated, or misunderstood. Jesus doesn’t want robots who all say the same testimony. He wants to do something unique in your life, and sometimes that means you will be alone.
Don’t look right or left. Of course don’t look at the unbelieving world — but also don’t compare yourself to other Christians. Don’t covet another person’s place in the distance. Don’t wish you could have a different calling. Don’t jump from lane to lane. Stop looking left and right because other Christians seem to be better than you. It’s not a competition. This wasted energy will only result in evil.
If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. — 1 Corinthians 12:15-18
Don’t worry about being the ‘next’ Fanny Crosby or the ‘next’ David Wilkerson or the ‘next’ anyone: be the first you. Believe it or not, you, yes you, have been called to do an important job, every bit as important as Fanny Crosby. The body of Christ loses out on way too much because people are trying to be someone else instead of working with what they have.
Other Christians speak in tongues and dance in the streets while you’re inside reading? Hooray for them. Other Christians are doing miracles while you’re not? Yay for them. It’s not a competition. As long as you are praying, learning, trusting in Jesus, and doing the best you can to please Him, you are doing enough. Let it be enough!
You have an important story to tell. It will take longer than you expect. It will be harder than you expect. It will be confusing, lonely, sometimes very dark, and almost always hiking uphill. But it’s the story that is yours, so own it.
Look neither right nor left.
“Little is much when God is in it. Labor not for wealth or fame. There’s a crown and you can win it, if you go in Jesus’ name.”
