The Word of God teaches that to love others is the product of a heart that is taught of God. It comes from a heart that has been touched by the love of God.
1 Thessalonians 4:9
“But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.”
Isn't it amazing that all we really have to do is "let" ... it's such hard work to fight and bicker, but to love is to just allow the Lord to work in our hearts and let it flow to others! Quite simple.
Hebrews 13:1
"Let brotherly love continue."
Philippians 2:3
"Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves."
John 7:36-39
36 What [manner of] saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find [me]: and where I am, [thither] ye cannot come?
37 In the last day, that great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet [given]; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Love is the product of a heart that knows God.
1 John 4:8
"He who does not love does not know God, for God is love."
Did you know that love, and walking in brotherly love is the mark of someone who believes on Jesus Christ and loves God? It's true. Read the verse above in context...
1 John 4:7-21
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to bethe Saviour of the world.
15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 We love him, because he first loved us.
20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
If we aren't walking in love (rather than strife) we are not in Christ.
James 4:1
“From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?”
That is why the Scriptures say that by this (our love toward the brethren) the world will know we are followers of Christ.
John 13:35
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
As verse 1 John 4:17 says, as He is, so are we (lights) in this world!
17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
We must not just talk it, but walk it....
1 John 3:18-24
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
According to the verses above, our love toward the brethren is a product of a heart that loves God. A heart that loves God, will keep His commandments. Love is the fulfillment of the Law! (Romans 10:13) And this is how we will be able to stand before Him. Do you want to hear Jesus say, "Well done, My good and faithful servant"? Or do you want Him to say, "Depart from Me, you who work iniquity, for I never knew you"?
1 Corinthians 8:3
“But if any man love God, the same is known of him.”
In order to know God, we must love Him. We cannot say we love God and hate the brethren. When we stand before Jesus, it will not be our good works that gains us entry into the everlasting kingdom of God. It will be the simple fact that we are known of Him! (Matthew 7:21-24) All of this - everything we do here - hinges on the simple answer to this question.... Do we love Him? Do we love the brethren? If the answers are yes, yes .... then, again....
Philippians 2:3
"Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves."
Hebrews 13:1
"Let brotherly love continue."
Lastly.... this is how we ought to handle a brother (or sister) who we feel is in error or a fault.
Galatians 6:1
“Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.”
Colossians 3:12-17
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do you.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also you are called in one body; and be you thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
1 Thessalonians 4:9
“But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.”
