Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him his debt.
But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.
So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desirest me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservants, even as I had pity on thee?
And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Forgiving others that we feel have wronged us in some way can be difficult. The point of this parable is to show how much sin debt God forgave us of, and how others have done little to us by comparison. It is like you owing God millions and He forgave you when you asked, and the person that did you wrong owed you $50 or something like that. If we won't forgive others, God won't forgive us and will even take back the pardon for sin we had previously received. We all need God's mercy to get to heaven, so we need to show mercy.
One other thing we need to take notice of. The person who was not merciful had originally been forgiven of his sins, so he was saved and on his way to heaven. Unforgiveness cost him his forgiveness, and he was sent to be tormented till he paid the debt. We cannot pay the debt of sin. Only the blood of Jesus can wash away sins, so this man who was clean and heaven bound lost his salvation. This is something we cannot afford to get wrong.

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. This is something that should make everyone think. Jesus says in no uncertain terms that if a person is not willing to forgive people that trespass against them, neither will "your Father" forgive your trespasses. If you trespasses are not forgiven, you can't make it into heaven. He is speaking to people whose Father is God. This is something you have to do. If I came into the company of many Christians today, and said that I don't care if you are a Christian, if you don't forgive men their trespasses, God won't forgive your trespasses, they would accuse me of promoting a works based salvation. What do they say when Jesus says that? Do they just ignore it? Do they deny it means what Jesus said?

What do they say when Jesus says that? Do they just ignore it? Do they deny it means what Jesus said?
The worrying part is why would someone oppose to practice forgiveness.
“Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.” - Matthew 5:7
“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you,
do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” - Matthew 7:12
If they see following such advice as something evil, the problem is in themselves.
“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” - 1 John 4:8
Then we make the following conclusion:
“The violence of the wicked will destroy them,
Because they refuse to do justice.” - Proverbs 21:7

Sometimes when someone has really wronged you, it can be difficult to let it go... “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief;
for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain,
‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” - Matthew 17:20
“Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned.
Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!” - James 5:9
“Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth...” - Colossians 3:5
“...Does this offend you?
What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before?” - John 6:61-62
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing.
The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” - John 6:63
“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” - Galatians 5:16

Nothing new, nothing new under the sun. As it is written (Ecclesiastes 1:9).
“My people come to you, as they usually do,
and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice.
Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain.” - Ezekiel 33:31
“Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who
sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well,
for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.” - Ezekiel 33:32
Yes, many hear Jesus' words but they do not put them into practice; and yet they speak of love.
“But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation,
against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.” - Luke 6:49
What a sad end for them.

What a sad end for them. That's very true letters . And let us who have the real joy and hope of the LORD endure faithful unto HIM till the last breath . Hands up letters , and praise the LORD .

I feel like unforgiveness will cost a lot of people heaven. To me the question is, does someone need to ask for forgiveness before we have to forgive them, or are we supposed to do it automatically?

I feel like unforgiveness will cost a lot of people heaven. To me the question is, does someone need to ask for forgiveness before we have to forgive them, or are we supposed to do it automatically? In this parable, the person did ask forgiveness. It does appear that forgiveness comes after repentance, but that doesn't mean it is good for us to hold on to unforgiveness and bad feelings if they didn't. It probably does us more harm than them at that point. If a person has come and asked forgiveness, I think you would have to go on as though they had never wronged you in the past, but if they don't, the best you may be able to do is not hold it against them. If someone is continually sinning against you, I am not sure how far you can go. God won't forgive someone who commits willful sins against him until they repent.
