Matthew 7:20-22 New King James Version (NKJV) 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
I Never Knew You 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’
When I came to this passage, I had so many questions. I will try to be organized in my thoughts.
1. Is this works-based righteousness?
2. How is it possible to be able to cast out demons and prophesy if you aren't a true believer in Jesus?
3. When Jesus says the will of my Father in Heaven', what exactly does that mean?
Does He mean witnessing, obedience to Scripture, or having a connection with God where He directs you each day and you're doing what He says hour by hour?
4. How can I know I'm doing God's will and will enter the Kingdom of Heaven?

Does He mean witnessing, obedience to Scripture, or having a connection with God where He directs you each day and you're doing what He says hour by hour? 4. How can I know I'm doing God's will and will enter the Kingdom of Heaven? 1. No.
Works do not save, only genuine faith in Jesus.
If you do not have faith nothing you do will make you go to heaven because what you do is NOT God's will.
Only the Spirit of God can lead you to salvation and obeying Him is crucial to your salvation.
“Now the Lord is the Spirit...” - 2 Corinthians 3:17
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” - Romans 8:14
“Jesus said to him,
I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” - John 14:6
Nothing else you obey will make you go to heaven. Only the Spirit of God.
“And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him...” - Hebrews 5:9
2. You do not.
This passage carries a spiritual interpretation that means how those who do not know Him used to use His name while they lived unrighteously (e.g. people in the world who enjoys a sinful a life and think God is OK about it).
This Scripture applies to and talks about false prophets, not true prophets.
False prophets teach, and consequently, live in ways that is contrary to God's will, they prophesy against Scripture (and yet they think it is right), they do wonders to deceive (not by the Spirit of God).
3. God's will is simple.
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality;
that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor...” - 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4
Only genuine believers will be able to be sanctified.
“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” - John 17:17
4. Read above.
A detailed explanation of Matthew 7:21-23:
“Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord...” - Matthew 7:22
“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” - Luke 6:46
“For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation,
of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” - Mark 8:38
“And then I will declare to them,
‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” - Matthew 7:23
“Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.” - 1 John 3:4
“...Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.
And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.
Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” - John 8:34-36
“Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.” - 1 John 3:6
“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” - John 8:32
“...the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” - 2 Corinthians 3:17
“Awake to righteousness, and do not sin;
for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.” - 1 Corinthians 15:34
May God bless you in Jesus' name!

How can I know I'm doing God's will and will enter the Kingdom of Heaven? Sister I will try to answer with the understanding I have so far on this, but you test it....some of it might need tweeking. Yes, I would say in a lot of cases it is works based righteousness and in a lot of cases it's also works based ambition...they are feeding their own flesh, their self-esteem, ambition, need for attention, need for sense of purpose, expressing their 'type A personality', greed for money, etc. I think a lot of these ministers start out well, but their uncrucified flesh gets tempted and then caught up in the whole merry-go-round and also due to lack of knowledge of God's will. Many aren't really doing things for the Lord and out of compassion for the oppressed and afflicted. Remember when the disciples were overjoyed that even the demons listened to them....but Jesus brought them up short and sober in the fear of the Lord and reminded them to only be thankful that they are saved, not to revel in the power. Jesus said everyone's works will be tested by fire and some works will be burned up and the person saved only as by fire. The scripture says that the gifts and callings of God are without repentance...God doesn't take away spiritual gifts but they can become corrupted and mixed with wrong spirits such as divination and occult things etc. A person can choose to no longer exercise their gifts, but it does seem from scripture that the Lord doesn't take them away Himself. I believe the will of the Father has to do with His will for their personal lives.....we are not our own but have been bought with a price.....many claim the name of Christ but live their lives as if He has no say in it, without seeking His will......they take jobs that aren't His will, marry someone outside of His will, move to an area He doesn't want them to live in, build a church or attend a church that is outside of His will, etc. It's possible for a person to make mistakes but to just live ones' life unto oneself is not seeking and doing the will of God. We don't always know for sure how we are doing, because the Lord is wrestling with powers and principalities and doesn't always give the game away....we are just to do our humble best and run the race so as to win it.....but we can trust the Lord is a fair and righteous judge, and He will guide, instruct or chastise us as we have need, and give light unto our path etc. To my understanding He only expects us to walk in what we have already attained.....He doesn't expect the same from a younger believer for example that He might expect from someone who is more matured in Christ, or someone struggling with issues that others don't have, etc, He just knows every little thing about each person, all the ins and outs of each life, more than we even know ourselves. He is fair and righteous and is always working on our behalf so that we make progress as long as we but follow Him. I believe it's more about how we run that race individually than how high we attain to in this life....since even Paul didn't consider that he had attained. The important thing is to be on that narrow path and going in the right direction and the Lord will lead us home as we follow Him, doing His will rather than our own. Some are greater and some are lesser in the kingdom of God just like in earthly life....and even so I have a hunch that many may be surprised to find out one day that God doesn't judge the way man judges.

How can I know I'm doing God's will and will enter the Kingdom of Heaven? Greetings sister.
1. Is this works-based righteousness?
would Jesus lead you to do works based righteousness? which would be vanity? would He lead you to a falsehood that would not give Him Glory? it would indeed be a fruitless, no glory giving to God path. Jesus is never going to tell you something bad for you... we may not always like the leading we receive however ALL things work for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose. even more, would a Holy God who never sinned and is our benchmark for what love is tell you something that would harm you? In a nutshell, its Gods will that we practice righteousness and step into holiness and live a holy life. Its Gods will that we do. there are so many false teachers today that preach against any kind of works that it has blinded and disabled many born again christians today... and for those who are applying themselves to LIVE as a living sacrifice unto The HOLY ONE that it confuses them... however, God is not the author of confusion. The truth is the only Way, and He Is The Way, we can live a holy life is complete dependency upon The Holy Spirit, living in a way where we hold nothing back, where we yield up any and every area of our life to Him to be LORD over. that is to say... He has complete ownership. He has His way with us, in us, and thru us... the song now plays in my heart... anything, i would give up for you, anything i would .... na na na nana. the thing is that many teachers today compromise on what the gospel is, on what the conditional aspects are of Jesus' teaching to appeal to the Godless masses who are not sincere in their heart. they have not come to the place where they want to step down from the throne of their heart, and let Jesus sit there and rule and reign. truly they are trying to get to heaven by another way. Nowhere in scripture does God ask us to practice righteousness... He commands it of us. and if anyone desire a relationship with Him, a deep honest and intimate relationship, they must do it His way. my advise to you is to reject any teaching that leads to hyper grace.
2. How is it possible to be able to cast out demons and prophesy if you aren't a true believer in Jesus?
you cant. the seven sons of sceva in acts found out the unclean spirits do not obey like that. the very scripture i reference now in response to your question is perverted by false teachers to promote their false teachings. the response is almost always given... i was apart of a delivery ministry so i would know. I tell you of a certainty my own mouth has commanded evil spirits... and it was ALL by the power of The Son of God in and thru me. Jesus Christ. it went from them trying to argue with me, to the Holy Ghost inside me turning to the side like it spun inside me, and now the face of Jesus was on my Spirit... every word i spoke was obeyed immediately, and i tell you of a certainty also... they were terrified and they did tremble. not once since then have i even heard that voice. there is no other power, no other ability. This passage you reference show clearly there are those who have tasted of righteousness but did not obey the command to holiness in life, and God rejected them on that day. osas is indeed a false hope told to draw in the masses in a way that makes the gospel more appealing by tickeling your ear. its doing nothing that the false prophets in the OT did that jeremiah spoke on. they said get ready to leave and go back to israel. but jeremiah said... not so... get ready to saty a while, have kids even. settle in, you aint going nowhere. History tells us Jeremiah spoke truth. Beware of false prophets, as the very testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy... so if the message is false... they be false. oh but thats kinda harsh isnt it? I say its more harsh what God said he would do to the false prophets. ooo-wee man. oo-wee. dont want to be in their shoes. there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
3. When Jesus says the will of my Father in Heaven', what exactly does that mean?
whatever The Holy Ghost leads you to do/not do in life. Just read in the bible and it will tell you do this, like like this, etc. it will warn against certain things/lifestyles/ways. He wants us to draw near to Him and live thru us. His plan for each of us, or calling, is different. His function for each of us in the body of Christ is different. we will only know for sure if we are close to Him. some of us its as simple as going to work and providing for our families... others are called to be martyred for the faith. The holy Spirit will lead you into this... seek Him and he will show you the way you are to go... seek Him and He wil show you your place in the body. rank and file. in every aspect tho it boils down to how you live. God dont want to drink from a dirty cup. He wants His temple clean.
4. How can I know I'm doing God's will and will enter the Kingdom of Heaven?
Mat 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Mat 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. Mat 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Mat 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Mat 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
the same message can be found thruout the entire bible, old and new testaments... STOP SINNING!, be ye holy as He Is HOLY... go and sin no more, crucify the flesh, put to death the deeds of the flesh.... we must put on the new man... Jesus Christ. we must walk in The Spirit and we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. the apple dont fall far from the tree... they say. our deeds/works will show who our Father/father truly is. do not fear or worry about this, instead yield these areas of your life where you fall short to God and watch Faithful and True show up... watch Him give beauty for ashes... watch Him provide... watch Him Give you every tool, every ability you need to overcome... and do the will of The Father in heaven. Oh Glory Hallelujah! He is SOOOO good. He gave His only begotten Son so that we may have life! will He stop at that... oh no, He will have His bride... free of all her guilt and shame. seek Him and prepare yourself as a bride does for her Groom... His desire for you is to great for words. Abraham was told not to sacrifice his son because God did not want/like that... but The Father did not withhold His Son from being sacrificed to pay for our sins... The Book says He will gives mens lives... Mens LIVES for you. do not fear you will fall short, but recognize you fall short anyway and you need Him to do this... and fully put your trust in Him to overcome and to do whatever His will for you is... and seek Him for it to come to pass. all His promises are sure.

Thank you all so much for your responses. I was praying to God about this.
I think I'm meant to surrender my whole life to the Lord and seek His will in everything. Rather than just "doing me" and referring to Him sometimes.
I want the Holy Spirit to flow all the time. I don't want to "turn it off".
