I already saw many people saying that we are not saved because of works, but by grace through faith.
And many people use the following verse to prove that:
❝For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves;
it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.❞ - Ephesians 2:8-9
Well, I agree that we are not saved because of our works.
❝for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...❞ - Romans 3:23
The problem is that some people make it mean that just because we are not saved because of our works we have some kind of license to walk in sin.
And this is not true.
❝What then?
Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace?
Certainly not!❞ - Romans 6:15
The believer does not have a license to walk in sin...
❝If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.❞ - Galatians 5:25
❝For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.❞ - Romans 8:6
The truth is:
We are not saved because of our works because the works of our old life did not glorify God.
When we were lost in the world we walked according to the flesh...
❝...those who are in the flesh cannot please God.❞ - Romans 8:8
❝Because the carnal mind is enmity against God;
for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.❞ - Romans 8:7
And everyone who walks in the flesh is not pleasing God, even if they try, they simply cannot.
Then, we can come to the conclusion that no one who is in the flesh can truly please God.
❝But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.❞ - Romans 8:9
And if no one who is the flesh can please God then they cannot be justified before God.
❝Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified
in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.❞ - Romans 3:20
Then, those who are in the flesh must come to repentance.
❝Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out,
so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord...❞ - Acts 3:19
And repentance means to confess your sins, to desire a change, to humble yourself before God, to (truly) seek Him (by faith).
After (sincere) repentance takes place, God forgives the sins through Jesus and blesses the new believer with His Spirit.
❝Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins;
and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.❞ - Acts 2:38
Remembering that only through Jesus one can receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
❝For you were bought at a price...❞ - 1 Corinthians 6:20
❝...Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.❞ - Romans 8:9
Your sins are forgiven because of Jesus' pure blood that was shed on the cross.
Are you seeing any reason for the man to boast?!
Certainly not. All glory to God, through Jesus.
❝for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...❞ - Romans 3:23
After repenting, receiving forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit what is the logical thing to do?
❝Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.❞ - 2 Corinthians 5:17
❝knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be
done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.❞ - Romans 6:6
❝and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man
which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.❞ - Ephesians 4:23-24
Now, we should live our new life by faith which works through love.
❝We love Him because He first loved us.❞ - 1 John 4:19
❝This is love, that we walk according to His commandments...❞ - 2 John 1:6
Conclusion:
❝For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.
And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world.
And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith.❞ - 1 John 5:3-4
May God bless you in Jesus' name!
