And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician,; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Luke 5:27-32
Jesus was not someone who was too good to associate with people that were considered less than desirable among the religious crowd. He would often eat and drink with people that were sinners, but there is one important thing that some like to overlook. While Jesus never condemned people or looked down on them, neither did he say it was just fine if they continued in their sins if they wanted to be his disciples. Jesus said that he did not come to call the righteous, "but sinners to repentance." The message of salvation is not that people can come to Christ through faith, but remain the same. If there is no change after your encounter with Jesus, something is wrong. The message is that no matter how sinful you are, Jesus is willing and able to save you if you are willing to accept Him as your Lord and Savior and repent of your sinful ways and follow Him.

It is amazing how many people will trip over themselves to explain a passage calling to obedience away by saying,
"Now Jesus was not teaching works based righteousness here..."
I think they are tripping over themselves to avoid saying we have to obey the Lord to be truly saved.

it is Truth. How can a creature be new if it has the same nature, same habits? if its the same its not new. just a bunch of the same ol' same ol'. the question isnt if you are born again how can you be unborn... no no, the question is, if you are born again but there is no evidence of new life were you really born again? The Book says when Jesus began to preach the message was Repent. but now we have folks claiming repentance is not even necessary. They done made Jesus into a lucky charm necklace you just wear and you are magically saved. nothing inward with that message, But God is looking inward towards us, in our heart: Joe 2:13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. its not Gods plan to save you to leave you a sinner, He wants to transform you: 2Co 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. and He is always working this in and thru us: Php 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: We must certainly not remain in the world or in our sins: Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. In fact, apart of the message is the natural man must die, must be put to death in order to Live to God: Col 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: Col 3:6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: Col 3:7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
notice in verse 7 it says when ye lived in them...thats past tense. not present tense. this denotes a changed person.
But He dont want to just put the old man to death... he was actually already dead to be technical... He wants to fill the void with Life: Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. He even wants to set you on a path in life: 2Th 3:5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ. But... But... Just as the OP said, Just as Jesus said repent... we must repent. Psa 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. you cant "change your mind" if you dont turn from. when you do change your mind... you do turn from something.

<< 2Co 3:18 But we all, with open face BEHOLDING as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. >>
That is saying something right there, praise the Lord….there’s something about SEEING Jesus that is cleansing, His light dispelling our darkness, and this is why if we are struggling with a sin or shortcoming that we need to stay in His grace, resting in the Lord, in His Spirit, and LOOKING to Him to change us, not looking at ourselves. (Self-condemnation is such a killer, it makes us fall from grace when we get our eyes off Jesus onto ourselves. Satan is called the accuser of the brethren and we know that he comes but to kill, rob and destroy.)
There is even more glory coming for the people of God….the bible says we shall be like Him when we shall SEE Him AS HE IS. As wonderful as this present glory is, right now we are only seeing in a glass darkly compared to what is coming for us. We are like Moses sheltered in the cleft and only being able to see the back of God because no man can SEE God and live. But seeing/beholding Jesus as He is, fully and completely revealed, will utterly slay our old flesh nature and change us into another glory. The glory of the latter house will be greater than the former house...for Israel pointing to the glory of the new covenant as opposed to the old, but for the church pointing to the glory of the second coming of Christ.
Some might not agree, but I see the story of Job as being a picture of this. For all their talking they were only seeing in a glass darkly, only knowing in part. Again, for ancient Israel Job's story was foreseeing the new covenant and the first coming of Christ, and how He came by His Spirit also (“I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you”).... but for the church I believe it is also alluding to His second coming.
Job 42:5-6
My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have SEEN you.
Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.
(Dust and ashes…death.)
Jesus said, Blessed are you who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for you will be FILLED (with more of His Spirit). Are we satisfied with ourselves as we are, or are we longing and hungering and thirsting and groaning to be changed, eagerly looking for His coming?
Rom 8:23
Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.
2Co 5:2
Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,
2Co 5:4
For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
Thank you Jesus, the Spirit and the bride say come.

Just as many of the religious leaders of that time had an encounter with Jesus and yet were not changed and saved.
Many of the religious stayed the same, in their sins and thinking they were righteous in the sight of God.
Basically, that is what self-righteousness is.
Think about people today who think they are just good enough because they are not as sinful as a thief or a murderer.
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself,
‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men — extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. - Luke 18:11
But in that Day, they will find out they were just as bad sinners as them. But it will be too late.
...unless you repent you will all likewise perish. - Luke 13:3
And then I will declare to them,
‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ - Matthew 7:23

Many are following the spirit of anti-Christ, that is why many will be told: Depart from Me, I never knew you, by the Lord Jesus Himself.
Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey,
you are that one’s slaves whom you obey,
whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? - Romans 6:16
And an other quick reminder:
Little children, let no one deceive you.
He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. - 1 John 3:7

He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. - 1 John 3:7 when them socialist commies pretending to be a democrat see entire cities being burned down, stores looted, people killed, people run over, covered in graffiti, police being injured and some even severely while some are shot in the head in a squad car in broad daylight, their own lockdowns and curfews ignored... and on and on... its just peaceful protesting. but when it comes to their doorstep, and not near the same magnitude... they say its not fair. they say they are domestic terrorists. its true, all serpents have forked tongues.
and then they steal an election for many positions. and then they have the audacity to even hint about re-educating folks.
because of all this, and not this only, but just on this it is just for this nation to be humbled by The One whose hand you can not escape. and there is so many more reasons. what great mercy we have been shown.
may God make distinction between His own and Egypt. even if there be five righteous, oh KING?
and if this nation is to be humbled, and not only by lawlessness... just imagine what the earthquakes and natural disasters in divers places will be like this year. because we are already paying for the worlds abortions again thanks to honest joe. we are already tens of thousands put out of work in only 2 days of joe-bobs term. other countries are already back to hating us. a proverb and a by-word God said in 2 chronicles. and the paris deal... all that really does is let china pollute all they want and we cant, thus we are back to being dependent on china's goods again. along with open borders again. americans jobs are going away. but the socialists dont care. they would rather not work and get a random handout. prices of everything are about to go up too. and what did God say in Hosea? they didnt know it was Him who gave them their corn and flax and wool and wine... so He will take it away so the people would say... it was better with my first husband, let me return to Him. Yes. God dont change. God gave the call to this nation to repent... and this nation, just like in Hosea failed to do so. now she will be humbled.
we need to be not wasting one opportunity to speak on repentance. i am even thinking about getting a bunch of those political signs vote for whoever, you know they stick them in their front yard... go put them all over town with messages of repentance.
to make it even worse, many people cant go to a church and find truth anymore... many churches are turned, lukewarm, lost their first love, deep in false teachings, etc. they are busy building their own empire. building those cield houses... and The LORDS house lie in waste.
if we remain silent they wont hear the only message that could save them if they heed.
when you really give thought to how easy it would be for God to just have a couple volcanic eruptions and bury this country in ash, a tsunami and a couple earthquakes and we would all be gone... it makes me think how awesome His mercy is. it makes me want to live better, not from fear, but because of how good He is.

Many churches have indeed gone away from teaching repentance and the need for true discipleship to Jesus.
I remember just a couple years ago since my husband and I just could not find the right church. But I think God called us away from those churches intentionally.
In the end, Im glad. I found Narrow Way and I have been forced to rely on the Bible and not the false teachings so prevalent in the churches.
The main one I dodged was the teaching that you can never lose your salvation. The other big one was that false kind of grace that supposedly lets you keep on sinning and you're still right with God.
Prominent, prominent church leaders were teaching this.
Now, if you say that Jesus ransomed us so we could be free from sin, people look at you funny.
Greasy grace seems to be the order of the day.
Ultimately I don't have time for it. I want so desperately to know God more closely and I know He has every right to hate sin and wish it gone from us.
He is the most awesome, most loving Being in the universe. He deserves our best.
