Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered. 1 Peter 3:7
The Bible tells men that their prayers may be hindered if they don't obey this verse concerning their wives. What are they told to do? There are two things.
1. Dwell with them according to knowledge.
2. Giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel.
If married men don't do that, it can prevent our prayers from being answered, so what does this mean? Dwell with them is pretty easy, at least to understand. The words, "according to knowledge" struck me a little strange. The only conclusion that I could come to was that we are to dwell with our wives according to what we know is Biblically right. What the Bible says concerning this matter is we are to love our wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it.
Then it says "giving honour unto the wife." What does that mean? I take it to mean treating them in a respectful way, as opposed to always belittling them and putting them down in front of others. How many men go around calling their wives "the old ball and chain," or saying other derogatory things? Perhaps we should all consider the kind of things we say and do. What does it mean when it says, "as unto the weaker vessel?" It can mean weaker physically. We know that as a general rule, men are normally stronger. It can also mean weaker in the sense of being tricked by the devil as a result of emotions, as Eve was deceived, rather than Adam. Regardless, the instructions men are given is to give their wives honour.
Simple instruction for men from this single verse. If you want your prayers to be answered, dwell with your wife according to Biblical instructions and give them honor.

Good reminders. And I believe (speaking as a married woman) that dwelling with your wife according to knowledge, means to make an effort to notice and care what her preferences are about things. Try to know and understand her...being attentive is really the opposite of taking her for granted. And of course a wife should offer the same kind of courtesy to her husband. Try not to drive each other nuts. As Christ loved the church....means sacrificially. Doesn't mean to cow-tow to her every whim though....if a wife is being unreasonable or selfish or controlling, then some communication and negotiation are needed and the husband can offer a stabilizing effect to her emotional side. Just my words of wisdom here. Good topic.

I believe that "according to knowledge" means living with them in an understanding way---being reasonable and considerate, rather than harsh and unreasonable---a way that agrees with and is guided by the New Testament's other teachings about love and how Christians are to treat one another (and unsaved people), which you mentioned in your OP: 'Live with your wife according to Biblical instructions'. The Bible's instructions, and the understanding that God gives us to know how to apply those instructions to our lives in various situations and relationships, is our knowledge for doing all things in a way that is pleasing to Him.

It can be summed up , IN HOW JESUS TREATED the church . HE gave all for it , BUT HE ALSO CORRECTED ANY ERROR . A man who just seeks to please his wife , will be in danger , IF HE SEEKS NOT to PLEASE THE LORD FIRST AND FOREMOST . IF ON HIS heart is the desire to please GOD FIRST , THEN HE HAS the eyes on HOW to love and honor the wife . and I tell us all THIER IS NO Better example THAN JESUS HIMSELF . HE DID all for the sake of the CHURCH and HIS LOVE ALWAYS CORRECTED error . FOR HE DESIRED NONE TO PERSIH . A man who wont serve GOD FIRST will never know the right way on how to do things . LET JESUS sum it up . HE WHO LOVES MOTHER , FATHER , HUSBAND OR WIFE children MORE THAN ME IS NOT WORTHY OF ME . LET US remember this . IF THIS WE DO KNOW and have been taught OF THE LORD . THEN WE WILL SEE CLEARLY how to do all things . OUR desire cannot be for anything first before GOD . THE DESIRE that comes FROM THE SPIRIT instructs us HOW TO LIVE DAILY and by that grace , by the indwelling spirit , BY also instruction in righteous living FOUND IN THE SCRIPS that makes us wise unto salvation . IF we heed men and are made wise by their own instructions and not biblical sound doctrine . THEN we are made wise , BUT NOT UNTO SALVATION through faith in CHRIST BUT UNTO SLAVATION to sin by havin faith in men.
