Have you ever promised someone you would pray for them (having every good intention to include them in your bedtime prayers), only to realize several days later that you never did? Have you ever put off a prompting from the Spirit because you were too busy at the moment, only discover later on that your help is no longer welcome? Have you ever been hit with a revelation, only to see it die on the vine because you didn't make it stick?
We are creatures who live in time and space. Yes we serve an eternal God in a spiritual world with its own timeline, but we live in this universe, and that means something. Our lives happen in a series of moments. God's interaction with us occurs that way, and very often He expects us to interact back with Him at the moment of the encounter.
Paul tells us in 2 Timothy 4:2, Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. We must be able to instantly recognize what "season" we find ourselves in, sometimes down to the very minute, and do God's work whether it's convenient or not.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make in your spiritual walk is to only worship/pray/preach at certain times. Many Christians think they can only worship with a music team in church on Sunday. Many think prayer must be a formal occasion on a schedule. Some think prayer and worship only need to happen when they're in the right mood.
If your capacity for spiritual action is dependent on what mood you're in, what day it is, or what your schedule looks like, you won't get very far. Life happens whether we are ready or not. People need our help, in very precise moments, whether we feel like it or not.
Today I encourage all of us (myself first and foremost) to make time for God's work. We should always be in the mood to talk about God. We should always be willing to pray for someone at the moment they ask, no matter if we're standing in the middle of a department store. If we can't be bothered to spend 30 seconds in prayer, we need to examine our priorities. And if we are rarely in the mood for spiritual service, we need to ask ourselves what exactly we are in the mood for.
The next time you get that prayer request, pray for them, even if quietly under your breath, as soon as you can. Don't make empty promises. Obey the Spirit's prompting immediately. Write down that revelation and share it with a friend before it evaporates.
Yes, this does mean that we may have to change our lifestyles. If you feel like you can't pray on a Friday afternoon because you've been living in sin all week, here's a sign in big flashing lights that you have a problem. Those who fix their eyes on heaven are always on the edge of their seat waiting for God's next word. If that doesn't describe your life, now is your chance to fix that.
