For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Here is the good news of the gospel. There was a time, before coming to know Jesus, that you were the servant of sin, and by default, the servant of Satan. You were free from righteousness, as you can't serve two masters. There is an old secular song, by a man that is hardly a servant of the Lord, that says, "You've Got To Serve Somebody. It may be the devil, or it may be the Lord, but you've got to serve somebody." Bob Dylan likely didn't know how true that is. Everyone serves the devil or Christ. Before a person is saved, they are powerless to be righteous in the sight of God. The best they can do is as filthy rags before him. You served sin. The only fruit you had was evil fruit that led to death and destruction.
The good news is that through faith in Christ, you are no longer the servant of sin. Jesus bought you. He redeemed you by the blood he shed on Calvary's cross, and now you are become His servant. Whereas you had evil fruit leading to death and destruction, now you have good fruit that leads to a life of holiness and the straight gate leading to everlasting life. This is the good news of the gospel. Jesus blood washes away the sins of those that put their trust in him, so the penalty of death was paid for by the Lord, and you don't have to die spiritually and spend eternity in hell. This is a free gift the Lord offers to those who turn to him.
