If ye love me, keep my commandments.
How can this be? Jesus equates our love to him with keeping his commandments. Most of the church today acts like commandments, laws, anything that requires anything of us is a dirty word and they call it legalism, yet Jesus tells us that if we love him, he expects us to keep his commandments. I would point out that Jesus commanded us more than to love or believe. Loving God and our neighbor were referred to as the great commandments, but Jesus never said that was all, just like he never said believing on him was all. What are Jesus' commandments? Go through the gospels and read all of the words in red.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Jesus know that he will be leaving the disciples soon, but he promises them that he is going to pray to God the Father, and that the Heavenly Father will send them another Comforter. Jesus won't be walking side by side with them instructing them as before, as he will be at the right hand of the Father, but they will not be alone. The Comforter will abide with them forever, and Jesus calls Him the Spirit of Truth. There is nothing but truth in God. Everything that God tells us is true. We can trust it. Only the true Christians can see the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot. The thought may enter your mind, how can we see God's Spirit, much like some of the disciples were wanting to see the Father. We see God's Spirit through spiritual sight, just like we see God's Kingdom through spiritual sight. You know by faith that God's Spirit is with you. That is what he said to the disciples, but he promised that the Spirit would not just continue to abide with them, but would be in them. This was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2.
I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
This is an interesting verse. He just got through telling them that he was leaving, but would pray that the Father would send them another Comforter. Now Jesus says that he won't leave them comfortless, but will come to them. I feel like that means that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one, as Jesus and the Father are one. There is one God, but He exists in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit is come to live inside of them, it is also Jesus living inside. Pretty powerful verse.
Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
This verse should make you want to shout. Just as the world cannot see the Spirit, and therefore cannot receive the Spirit, we can see Him. The world will not be able to see Jesus either after he leaves physically, but we see him! We see his reality. We know that He lives, though the world believes he is in the grave. Because Jesus lives, the elect will live also.
At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
Imagine that! At that time, I believe He is speaking about the day of Pentecost when the Spirit is poured out, they will know beyond any doubt that Jesus and the Father are one, and His Spirit is in us. In that sense, we are made one with the Lord, not to become gods, but in the sense that He is living on the inside.
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Jesus already told them that if they love him, they will keep his commandments. Now he is saying that those that keep his commandments are the ones that love him, and therefore, if you keep Jesus' commandments, you will be loved of God the Father and Jesus and Jesus will manifest himself to us. Conditional. To keep Jesus commandments = Loving Jesus. Loving Jesus by Keeping his commandments = Being loved by Jesus and God the Father. It also means that Jesus will reveal himself to you if you are obedient to him.
Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which you hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.
One of Jesus' disciples wanted to know why Jesus was only going to manifest himself to the church, and not the world. Jesus said that if a man loves him, he will keep his words. That goes even further than commandments, but entails everything that Jesus has taught, going back to his teaching in the sermon on the mount, the parables, everything. If we keep his words, that shows we love him, and the Heavenly Father will love those individuals, and Jesus and the Father will come to them and abide with them. These words were from the Father in Heaven, not Jesus. Those who do not keep Jesus' sayings do not love Jesus. They may say they do, but it is all lip service and of no value. They are lying to themselves and others when they say they love the Lord.
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Jesus spoke to the disciples and told them these things face to face, but he will be returning to heaven soon. The Holy Ghost will teach them "all things, and bring all things to" their "remembrance, whatsoever" Jesus has said to them. Today, much of the church will scoff at the very notion that the Holy Ghost is our teacher. Instead, they cast Him aside and look to things like hermeneutics. Jesus said it was His very Spirit that would teach us all truth. As we read and meditate on scripture, the Holy Ghost on the inside will reveal the meaning, if we will trust in Him to do so.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
This was a hard pill to swallow for the disciples, because they loved the Lord and wanted him to remain with them, but Jesus tells them that if they love him, they should rejoice that He will soon be returning to His home in heaven to be with the Father. The Father, who we often refer to as the God-head, is greater than Jesus, though Jesus is God. I know that this is hard at times to understand, that there is but one God in three persons, but that is the case, and the Father is the head. Jesus and the Holy Spirit do the will of the Father, and are in complete unity. Jesus says that he will give us peace. The world does anything but give us peace. It gives us stress. It gives us uncertainty and heartaches, but Jesus says He gives us peace. We should not let our hearts be troubled and we should not be afraid.
And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
Jesus is saying that he will not be around much longer directly teaching about the Kingdom and mysteries of the things of God. His time is running out as the prince of this world, Satan, is coming, and Satan has nothing in him. Jesus is telling them all these things so when they come to pass, they will remember and believe. Jesus came to earth to do the will of the Father, to fulfill the Father's commandments to him, and He is prepared to do so, all the way to the cross.
