A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to his host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbor unto him that fell among thieves?

Right after Jesus asked that question, the response he got was, "He that shewed mercy on him."

Go, and do thou likewise.

We talk about the relationship between good works and faith. This is a great example. The person who has faith doesn't go and help his neighbor to save himself. He goes and helps his neighbor because of his faith. It comes natural to the Spirit-led Christian to do that. On the other hand, the person walking in the flesh cannot be bothered, so he walks on the other side of the street. We may look at this example, and what Jesus said, and start following the Lord's teachings, and we should. That is called being a doer of the Word and not a hearer only, but that is in direct correlation to our faith. We believe in Christ and the things he says, and we, as good disciples, obey.

We talk about the relationship between good works and faith...
It makes no sense for some to come and start preaching against practicing good works and say:
You works earn! You legalistic!
If it was like this then Jesus and the early church was very legalistic, they've always encouraged people to do good and forsake sin.
“This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly,
that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works...” - Titus 3:8
“Let your light so shine before men,
that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” - Matthew 5:16
Scripture is clear. You must be a fool to go against it.
“The fool has said in his heart,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity...” - Psalm 53:1
Sorry!

...they've always encouraged people to do good and forsake sin. And let us remember that forsake means to forsake. It is not what many is doing today, they say:
I am going to church.
But I see you again when I return, dear sin.
Keep quiet until I return. Keep quiet!
Yes, it is exactly what is happening to many. But why?!
“Jesus answered them,
“Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.
And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.
Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” - John 8:34-36
