But what things were gain to me, I counted loss for Christ. Yea, doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

No matter what we have to give up in service to the Lord, it will be worth it all when we hear him say "Well done" when we stand before him. Nothing down here is worth holding onto if it means losing our soul.

Paul lost a lot of things when he became a Christian. His worldly education was no longer any value to him, because he was educated at the feet of Gamileo to be a good Jew, not a Christian. He lost all of his old friends. Now he had begun a new life preaching the very message he despised and persecuted before. Those who had been his enemies were now his friends and allies. Paul gladly gave up all those old things, counting them as dung, so He could serve the Lord. I know that He never regretted that decision.
We too will have to give up our past to follow the Lord. We may lose old friends, and we will lose our old life, but it will be worth it all when we stand before the Lord at the final judgment.

I know what you mean, and I agree, but Paul's education was still an asset to him, as was his understanding about how his enemies think. We have to give up our past life to serve the Lord, but we can still learn from past mistakes and experiences.
