In Joshua, one man sinned and God let over 30 people get killed in battle? Why not help them and just destroy the sinner? Glad you are still going through the Bible with us. Achan, the son of Carmi committed a trespass, and the children of Israel were unaware of it. They were getting ready to go to battle against Ai, and they were so confident it would be easy, they didn't even send a large company to destroy the city. It doesn't appear like the children of Israel sought the Lord before going to battle. They just acted on their own. I am not going to fault them too much for that. They had no idea there was sin in the camp, but I would imagine that had Joshua sought God ahead of time, he would have known not to send troops in because the Lord was not with them. God being with them was conditional upon them keeping His covenant.
Joshua was very upset when Israel was smitten before their enemies. He went to God about it, and here is what the Lord told him. In Joshua 7:11-12
Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff. Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
I believe that had Joshua been in tune with God before the battle, this would not have happened. God would not help them so long as they had sin in the camp. Once the sin was dealt with, God would once again fight for Israel. Of course, Achan was stoned to death for troubling Israel, and causing the needless death of 36 men.

That is an interesting point. When you read the story, it doesn't appear like Joshua or any of them sought the Lord before they entered into that battle.

That is an interesting point. When you read the story, it doesn't appear like Joshua or any of them sought the Lord before they entered into that battle. God did promise to deliver the people into their hands, so they probably did not see the need. They were walking by faith, but when I read that particular story, and the nonchalant way they went into that battle, I feel like the casualties could have been avoided if they had sought God first.
