As we experience life in the day of modern appliances, and depend on them, it got me wondering how people survived without a refrigerator? When I have considered life off the grid, and priorities for solar power, my number one concern involves the kitchen, mostly the refrigerator and freezer to keep food fresh. I realized how ignorant I am, and if one has to, they can survive with no electricity at all. Some get by without it today.
Among the new things I learned about this week was the purpose of a root cellar. I was so ignorant about such things, all I knew about it in the past was that Granny wanted one in the back yard near the cement pond on "The Beverly Hillbillies." All I knew was it was a hole in the ground, but nothing about food storage. There are very interesting videos made by people with no electricity in their home on YouTube, as well as how they preserve food, and even how to build a root cellar and how to use it. While there is a lot of garbage on television and in places like YouTube, there are many things that are valuable too, where you can get a free education about how to do a lot of things. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of these resources while you can. It may help us in the future if we are suddenly without power.

Like just about everyone else, I am hooked on modern technology. I hate to think of life without it.

oh the simplicity . did you know that if you dig just ten feet down , the temp is a constant around fifty degrees . HOW slow indeed ice would even melt . YOU can survive quite easy . but far more than this , IS just knowing ONE THING . MY FATHER FEEDS the sparrows , YE are of much more value than birds , they store not up , YET HE FEEDS THEM . HE WILL US TOO . ANd you wanna know why i am such a staunch beleiver HE WILL and thus i got ZERO WORRIES . CAUSE JESUS SAID HE WOULD . FOR ME , that makes it case closed . TRUST THOU IN HIM . NOW HANDS UP , i hear a massive praise fest a coming . Go on john . You know you want too , PUT THOSE HANDS UP and PRAISE THE LORD . THIS gringo is FREE MAN . FREE of worry , free of anxiety if i die , then i die , WITH JESUS i am , IF I LIVE , LET IT BE ONLY FOR HIM . GOOD HEAVENS THAT IS TOTAL PEACE . JUST AS JESUS SAID WE WOULD HAVE . CLING TO THE KING , CLING TO , HIS EVERY WORD .

when i was homeless i used to fill two milk jugs with water and bury them with only the top of the handle with enough above ground for one finger and the lid above ground, and shaded all day. i was drinking cold water in the heat of summer in Texas.
in the winter its warm underground here.
the trick is to keep bugs and critters out. and dirt.

We are all so spoiled on modern technology and having electricity, most do not know how to get by without it, and do not think of simple things like that. Thanks for sharing that. It might come in handy.
