Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for every. 1 John 2:15-17

And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for every. 1 John 2:15-17 This passage tells us exactly what it means to love the world and the things of the world, and 2 of the 3 things involve lust. There is the lust of the flesh, which to me would involve sins of the flesh, and sins you allow to come inside through your eyes. The other thing mentioned involves pride, which to me involves seeing yourself as not needing God, but being convinced you can make your own way in your strength just fine, like those rich and increased with goods.
What is the simple instruction to us to keep us from this sin? Do the will of God and abide forever.

I think the pride of life is thinking you can make a name for yourself outside the will of God. The lust of the eyes seems like the desire to acquire more material goods than one needs. The lust of the flesh seems like desires that come from within ourselves that war against the well being of our souls.
