Gentle Speech By: Patricia Raybon

The Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome. 2 Timothy 2:24
Today's Scripture & Insight:
2 Timothy 2:22–26 I was on Facebook, arguing. Bad move. What made me think I was obligated to “correct” a stranger on a hot topic—especially a divisive one? The results were heated words, hurt feelings (on my part anyway), and a broken opportunity to witness well for Jesus. That’s the sum outcome of “internet anger.” It’s the term for the harsh words flung daily across the blogosphere. As one ethics expert explained, people wrongly conclude that rage “is how public ideas are talked about.”
Paul’s wise advice to Timothy gave the same caution. “Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone” (2 Timothy 2:23–24).
Paul’s good counsel, written to Timothy from a Roman prison, was sent to prepare the young pastor for teaching God’s truth. The apostle’s advice is just as timely for us today, especially when the conversation turns to our faith. “Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth” (v. 25).
Speaking kindly to others is part of this challenge, but not just for pastors. For all who love God and seek to tell others about Him, may we speak His truth in love. With every word, the Holy Spirit will help us.
Reflect & Pray Why is it vital as a believer in Jesus to avoid arguing with others on the internet (and in other contexts)? When you’re led by the Holy Spirit, how does the tone of your comments—your heart—change?
Father God, when I’m speaking to others about Your truth—or other interests—indwell my heart and tongue with Your love.

SCRIPTURE INSIGHT In his second letter to young pastor Timothy, Paul uses some familiar words that are worth exploring a bit deeper. In 2 Timothy 2:22, Paul encourages Timothy to “flee the evil desires of youth.” The word Paul uses for flee is pheuge, which means “escape” or “run away.” Paul is telling him to remove himself physically from the danger. In the moment of temptation, the best thing to do isn’t to fill ourselves with courage and rely on our willpower, but to run away. This word is also used in Paul’s first letter to Timothy (6:11) when he tells the young man to flee from the love of money. And we see it in Matthew 2:13, when the angel of the Lord tells Joseph to take the baby Jesus and Mary and escape to Egypt. J.R. Hudberg
2 Timothy 2:22-26 King James Version 22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.
24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

all you need to tell how arguing on facebooks is foolish...
while this does not seem like a good spiritual council response... it really does show how petty, how vain, how pointless it is because someone will try to troll you for spelling something wrong or misusing words. they can see that... but most often wouldnt know the truth if it slapped them silly. If you find yourself in one of these convos.... your speaking to a malicious spirit, a hateful bird. let em squawk at someone else. someone like that is blind and cant see truth.

just make a grammatical error.

Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! - Matthew 23:24
For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men —
the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do. - Mark 7:8
Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men,
but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. - Matthew 23:28
They cannot endure a grammatical error. And God cannot endure iniquity.
If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture,
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well... - James 2:8
For there is not a just man on earth who does good
And does not sin. - Ecclesiastes 7:20
For we all stumble in many things.
If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. - James 3:2
Conclusion:
bearing with one another, and forgiving one another,
if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. - Colossians 3:13

I think there are times where we can sin in our anger by saying things we should not in the heat of the moment, but I also believe there is a time for anger. The Bible says to be angry and sin not, Ephesians 4:26. Jesus got angry and showed emotions when he encountered the money changers in the temple, and he also strongly rebuked the religious leaders of his day. Paul had a strong contention with Barnabas. I do think we should try to watch our words, and I need to do a better job in this area, but I do not think all anger and rebukes are bad.

Therefore rebuke them SHARPLY . no , not all grave serious rebukes are wrong . I mean look at what the Holy Spirit did to annianas and saphira . save some through fear , others through compassion . But we must focus on biblical correction . Look what paul and barnabas told the jews when they too rejected Christ . They laid it out plain . Look how plain stephen laid it out . But here is the problem i am seeing . When we argue with them politically . Heck they dont even follow JESUS . Our focus must be on winning the lost , rebuking and correcting the church . If folks dont even accept the gospel . What did JESUS say to do . Shake the dust off . He never said , if they hear not the gospel , well stick around and argue politics with them . Its useless and all it does is cause the wrong kind of strife , the wrong kind of anger . I mean if folks cant even follow JESUS and reject Him . THEN nothing else matters. John i am seeing something very deadly beginning to increase . I am seeing a church mindset that is growing and placing its hopes in men . I see folks getting ready to rage war for the sake of a man . And i mean some of them are even talking about blood shed civil war . WE cannot go down that road . If folks wont heed the gospel , then leave them and shake the dust off your feet . But to sit and fight and strive , get angry over politics . Its no good . How many liberals do you know who follow JESUS . AND I aint saying that to be mean . Not even many conservative christains do any more . We cannot let this distract us from our mission . Our mission is to reach souls and build up the church with bible sound doctrine . The rest is up to GOD . WHOEVER is gonna reign is gonna reign . AND even though i dont vote , well if one voted then they did what they could on that part . But now , we must abandon this . Its taking both sides captive . IF we cant convince a soul of the dire need of the real BIBLICAL JESUS , then how do you expect them to hear anything else we say . THEY cant . remember a soul that is blind IS BLIND . Thus CONVERSION to JESUS TIME , by the promoting of the gosple . AND yes correct those who claim HIM , but if they wont even hear the real gospel , but rather they follow this all inclusive gospel , and they wont repent . WE GOTTA MOVE ON . JOHN said if any brings any other gosple Do not even let them in your house or bid them god speed . IF they cant even follow the one true gosple , THEN what else matters . IF they willfully embrace sin and even claim the gospel , REBUKE , and if they repent not . MOVE ON . cast out . GOD will deal with those outside , we simply deal with those within. AND if folks within wont repent or hear correction , then do as we were taught . cast them out TILL THEY DO .

I do not think anger is sin either. if we look closely at the scripture you posted it says be angry and sin not... it dont say be angry and repent for being angry. its the actions or words that come from the anger. we are made in Gods similitude.... thus if we have emotions so does He. the hitch here is we have a fallen sin nature and we need to bring all that in line with The Spirit. Speaking of which....
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
we cant be letting the anger flow and at the same time be gentle. Proverbs 15:1 tells us that A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.... and we are to seek peace with everyone we can have peace with.
then there is meekness. to be meek sometimes we have to yield up to others when its not convenient. when we shouldnt really have to, according to self, but not according to grace and love.
there is a ton of scriptures that give us instructions about how to speak.
let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger thats out of James 1:9, Col 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person...Pro 12:18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing... Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.... Proverbs 15:4 A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit... Matt 15:11 Mat 15:11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. ... Pro 16:24 Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body... Pro 21:23 Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble. ... Pro 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. ... Isa 6:5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Isa 6:6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: Isa 6:7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Pro 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver... Pro 15:23 A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it! ... Pro 13:3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. ... Pro 12:25 Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad. ... Psa 141:3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. ... Rom 10:9 Because if you confess the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved. ... Mat 12:36 But I say to you that every idle word, whatever men may speak, they shall give account of it in the day of judgment. Mat 12:37 For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned. ...
ok, that is more than enough to convey the message... and there are so many more verses about how we speak.
anyway there are times where if we offer a soft meek and gentle response in love we will be run over. there are also scriptures about the righteous being as bold as a lion. Lions do not meow. they roar. the hitch is we dont roar unless we have a green light to do so. otherwise we are not bearing The Fruit of The Spirit, which means we done fell in a ditch, and lets just be honest... we may have got out locked the hubs in for 4x4 and went off road a good ways. Praise God I dont go to that extreme anymore. I do sometimes get snappy with people when i am stressed out... then i feel bad, got to repent, and go eat crow. Having to eat crow sure will make you want to do whatever you got to to not do that again.
I really feel like this is an area of my life God is pressing me on right now, and I encourage anyone if you feel you are lacking to pray about it and work on it. I encourage this because not only does He care about this... but its His way. Get fruit. ripe delicious fruit. so sweet. so juicy. mmmm. The Lord is Good.
