Long suffering . LONG suffering . HE suffered long with his children . if we even break down the word in enlgish . It means what the greek word said . to suffer long . that means allow without acting out vengeance . GOD IS LONG SUFFERING BUT , we all know it ends one day . He has suffered evil a long time and now its got so full, all we need to do is look at the examples in the bible to see both how long suffering GOD is , desiring none to perish , but that their comes a time , WHEN HIS WRATH DOES COME . days like lott, Sodom had swelled full of inquity to the point they did not tolerate any kind of correction . HMMMMMM , I see the same pattern building today. For us to be long suffering , it means no matter what we suffer , we don't act out vengeance, we simply allow it against us . With JOY in the LORD when we are persecuted . YEAH , PRAISE GOD , IS HE NOT SO MERCIFUL TO US and Gives us the abundante life , and that LIFE that is so abundant, means only this , TO KNOW CHRIST ONLY MORE , even in our sufferings , AND HAVING JOY when we are persecuted . MAN , the LORD sures gives us what we never earned , AND THAT IS A FACT . INSTEAD He gives grace and grace supplies all we need to endure . OH , man its time to both praise and rejoice in the LORD . Just a lil longer now , just a lil longer , and THEN HE that shall come will not tarry as HE COMES FOR HIS OWN . BUT FIRST get prepared , cause perseuctions are only going to get worse . BUT we WHO are HIS , GOT ALLL HOPE no matter what we suffer, no matter if we are killed . WE WIN CAUSE JESUS DONE WON . AND knowing this , ITS ALL THE HOPE I NEED to abound and rejoice in HIS salvation . OH PRAISE THE LORD PEOPLES . I mean bellow out a heart praise to the LORD .

While I have a Vine's Greek Dictionary, I rarely use it. It editorializes everything. I use Strong's Greek and Hebrew Dictionary. It just gives you the definition, and nothing else.
I have a hardback vines somewhere. it was once a prison book as it has one of the prisons name on it and unit after it. I got it from a retired baptist preacher who used to be heavy into prison ministry before he got in a motorcycle crash. I have found vines to be good... sometimes. mainly to compliment not as a standalone.
My thayers and the strongs i use for online stuff is off esword. they are free downloads. the actual book will probably contain more... my strongs is the exhaustive and it has more content than the free esword version. but not much.
esword has a few good free dictionaries. brown driver briggs for hebrew is pretty good. it also has strongs ref numbers but again its only hebrew. it also has several commentaries i like including Clark, Henry(entire and concise), darby, barnes, gill, JFB, McLauren, and others.
its all free stuff i have but there is more you can pay for. there are also files for the bible in almost every major language which may come in handy online some time.
Ya I use the same from E-sword, that is Strong's, many of the dictionaries and bible dictionaries, and the commentaries. Most of the definitions I quote are from there.

its the ability to endure persecution and ill treatment. sometimes when this word is used it shows an ability of the person to do revenge... but chooses restraint instead. I agree totally, but also here is another scripture: Eph 4:1-3 (1) I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, (2) With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; (3) Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. I believe it is also being longsuffering towards one another as well, in the body of Christ. Here is a comment from John Gill, concerning this: (John Gill) ( With longsuffering; bearing much and long with the infirmities of each other; without being easily provoked to anger by any ill usage; and not immediately meditating and seeking revenge for every affront given, or injury done; and so to walk, is to walk worthy of the grace of calling, or agreeable to it, to God that calls by his grace, who is longsuffering both with wicked men, and with his own people. Forbearing one another in love; overlooking the infirmities of one another, forgiving injuries done, sympathizing with, and assisting each other in distressed circumstances, the spring of all which should be love; by that saints should be moved, influenced, and engaged to such a conduct, and which should be so far attended to, as is consistent with love; for so to forbear one another, as to suffer sin to be on each other, without proper, gentle, and faithful rebukes for it, is not to act in love.)

Since I forgot to mention a counterfeit type of longsuffering, I will mention one now, along with a counterfeit Joy.
I find a type of counterfeit longsuffering, would be found in this type of ecumenical movement happening, were people just overlook error, let us just walk together, who cares about truth, let us be patient with one another, let us merge together, but it is not based on truth, but on error.
That is not true biblical longsuffering.
They call to break down the walls, but God calls us to build up the walls of the gospel.
And concerning a counterfeit joy, it would be joy that is motivated through the ways of this world, not biblical godly joy, or joy in the Lord, but joy really motivated through the works of the flesh in some manner.
One thing I think about, is this holy laughter movement, which usually takes place in Charismatic, faith movement circles.
Which is not of God.

Is it time for the fruit of Joy, my brothers and sisters ?? The Spirit rejoices in the truth.
When there is joy in overcoming sin, when there is joy in doing the will of God that joy is from the Spirit.
The Spirit gives joy in all circumstances. One can only be depressed if they allow.
Moments of sadness can come, but they are only moments. Discover the joy of the Spirit, the Lord has all the answers we need.
And we have no need to be anxious or to worry.
We just have to believe to have joy whenever needed.
Blessings to you all in Jesus' name!

I just downloaded the Thayer Greek dictionary on E-sword.
Here is what it says concerning Joy.
(Thayer)
(G5479
χαρά
chara
Thayer Definition:
1) joy, gladness
1a) the joy received from you
1b) the cause or occasion of joy
1b1) of persons who are one’s joy
Part of Speech: noun feminine
A Related Word by Thayer’s/Strong’s Number: from G5463)
But also i have been checking the bible via the words Cheerful, joy, and gladness.
Here is what I found:
Luk 1:14 (14) And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
Zec 8:19 (19) Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace.
I guess things to ponder upon.

I think I am starting to get somewhere with this next definition from the International bible Encyclopedia.
(International bible Encyclopedia)
(Joy
joi (שׁמחה, simḥāh; Χαρά, chará):
1. Terms:
The idea of joy is expressed in the Old Testament by a wealth of synonymous terms that cannot easily be differentiated. The commonest is simḥāh (1Sa_18:6, etc.), variously translated in English Versions of the Bible “joy,” “gladness,” “mirth”; from sāmēah, properly “to be bright,” “to shine” (Pro_13:9, “The light of the righteous rejoiceth,” literally, “is bright”), but generally used figuratively “to rejoice,” “be glad” (Lev_23:40 and very frequent).
Other nouns are māsōs and sāsōn, both from sūs, properly “to spring,” “leap,” hence, “exult,” “rejoice”; rinnāh, “shouting.” “joy”; gı̄l, from verb gı̄l or gūl, “to go in a circle,” hence, “be excited” (dancing round for joy), “rejoice.” In the New Testament, far the commonest are chara, “joy,” chaı́rō, “to rejoice” (compare Χάρις, cháris, “grace”). But we have also agallı́asis, which expresses “exuberant joy,” “exultation” (not used in classical Greek, but often in the Septuagint; in the New Testament, Luk_1:14, Luk_1:44; Act_2:46; Jud_1:24; Heb_1:9), and the corresponding verb agallı́aoo (-áomai), “to exult,” “rejoice exceedingly” (Mat_5:12, etc.). In English Versions of the Bible we have sometimes “to joy” (now obsolete as a verb), used in an intransitive sense = “to rejoice” (Hab_3:18; 2Co_7:13, etc.).)
I can see words popping out here such as rejoice, exultation, excited.
When there is joy, you see a type of rejoicing, exultation and excitement.

Now I quoted these verses:
Luk 1:14
(14) And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
Zec 8:19
(19) Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace.
And notice that the first word mentioned is the word joy.
There may be a slight distinction with joy , gladness and the word cheerful, but could it be that gladness and cheerfulness just simply flows from joy?
Could it be that simple?

I believe joy and gladness are not the same. i do not believe joy and happy are the same. I do not know I can do it much justice with words to explain but i will give it a go.
lets say you get a promotion at work that you have worked hard for and when you receive word of it you are then glad. once this settles in though the gladness is no longer so intense.
Joy is however not external, not outside in. joy radiates from inside out. I once knew a woman at a church I went to. she always had great joy. you could feel it standing next to her. evenn others at the church would say she is always filled with joy. she said she prayed a lot for joy. personally I have joy but not so often, as I have always prayed for peace because inside me it was chaos without peace. I know a great deal more about peace than joy. i think joy is more geared to whats eternal. at least for me it is based around a knowing that i am living eternally, that I have God who loved me enough to do all He did before I was born, and even now wont let go of me. I believe hope and joy are sisters.
what i have said is based on how I understand and use the words. someone else's view may vary.
God Bless.

I think that joy , gladness and cheerfulness can all be motivated through the Spirit of God, if one is yielding himself to the things of God, and rejoicing in the things of God.
Psa 32:11 (11) Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.
They are all in spirit form and make themselves manifest outwardly.
And of course the fruit of joy, gets manifest through the Holy Spirit.

Here are interesting verses with one putting the word gladness with the word heart.
Deu 28:47 (47) Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things;
Psa 51:7-9 (7) Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. (8) Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. (9) Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
