That always makes me laugh, frienduff ! lol I don't care what he says either! I once was so sickened by what Rome has done , that I told a group of catholics they need to vote me in as POPE so I can clean house . But , yeah they run me off . Imagine turning on the news . You would hear reporters gasping , and probably saying things like we got a new vicar that truly resembles a combo of mr clean and wyatt earp , minus the guns and bad language. I can almost see they filming and all you can hear from the inside is , GET THAT OUT , NO Bowing to that , YEAH that goes too, and loud crashes and shatters as false idols are getting throwed down . I Don't think I would last very long . but someone has to do something .

I promise us all this , you will learn much clearer by NOT just taking the word of these so called greek concordances , or men and instead go research our own language . and do it the old fashioned way , as in READ the books in the library . Its rather interesting I found this out too . IN one of those books , oester I think is how it was spelled. But even in those old books about how English took form. IT even says , this was brought into christanity and it was pagan. ITS EASTAR. the folks that were telling us that ROME had truly brought in pagan things into christanity , FOLKS they were not LYING even a book that is NON RELIGOUS says so and it breaks it down . Might be something to remember the next time one wants us to sing the yuletide at christamas or go running around picking up easter eggs . Just know , you are celebrating a pagan event . Wow, this sure got off the topic. But I hope it helps. I have found that it is far better to look up what an English word means BY researching the ENGLISH itself, rather than taking mens advice about what their greek says it means . OFTEN they contradict . NOT A GOOD SIGN at all. NOT a good sign at all. You all are loved . Easter is Ishtar. Worship of the queen of heaven. Semiramis etc. Sick. Easter was just after Passover and is wrongly translated and mentioned in the Bible. Remember, they still hate Jews today as always. If you do not believe me, take a look at the news. In the first century they hated them so much they banned Sabbath and promoted SUN-day. (yes, they also killed disobedient Jews). Later the RCC even bragged that they could change times and seasons since the Pope was infallible. In England the Jews had to wear those funny pointed hats and banned from regular trading. So they bought property and lent money. Then they were blamed for this because that made them wealthy!! Yule is celebration of Tammuz death (and supposed resurrection) he was killed by a pig, hence the pig roast at this time. All sick, all pagan. Ya cannot Christianize a Pagan Festival. X-mass etc is the SUN-god day celebrated by the Romans on or around December 25th. It is all so very obviously pagan. One must study history so that one can easily see repeated evil. To bury ones head in the sand is the surest way to be separated from it.

This is a subject that has been coming up a lot on other threads, so I thought I would post these questions here for everyone to answer, since it relates to this topic, so that everyone can get an understanding of what each other believes, and why we say what we say---with the goal of improving communication and coming together in truth.
Here are the questions:
1. What does it mean to live by "the letter"?
2. How does following the Spirit relate to the keeping of God's commandments (specifically referring to New Testament doctrine)? Do they work together, and if so, how?
Discuss.

To live by the letter is not the same as seeking the correct meaning and obeying it. The letter would have meant leaving a wounded ox in a pit on the Sabbath and stoning the disciples that picked corn to eat on the Sabbath. Being Spirit led isn't a disregard for God's laws. If you are violating God's Word, you aren't being Spirit led.
Spirit led Christians bear good fruit, and automatically do what is right. The scriptures are there to show us when we are going off track.

Living by the letter can mean one of two things: Either living by the law of Moses (which Christian's aren't under), or living the commands of the New Testament like a Jew would live the law of Moses: Like a checklist of laws that everybody does exactly the same, rather than by faith, and interpreting those commands in such a literal way as to miss the point of the teaching.
An example of living the commands of the NT "by the letter" would be giving your money to everyone who asked you for spare change, because Jesus said to give to everyone who begs from you (Luke 6:30). But the Lord didn't mean that we should give our money (His money) to every person who begged from us independent of the leading of His Spirit in the matter; and that is faith. I'm not going to give money to an alcoholic or a drug addict to buy liquor or drugs; I'm not going to put my money in every donation box I see, or give it to every person who asks me to make a donation to their ministry. Keeping that command (the point of which I believe is generosity and compassion) requires knowing how the Lord would have me to do it. A legalist would say I was sinning if I didn't give to every person who begged from me.
Legalism is not the same as insisting on obedience to the commandments of the NT, which is the love of God (1 John 5:3,4). How many of those commands are lived depends on faith, as in the example above---but this truth can be abused by people who just don't want to obey God's commands, and who interpret what is written away so that they can disobey it.
Abuse of Scripture can happen in either way, either by legalism, or by taking license. God does want us to keep every command that He has given us in the New Testament---and that is not legalism; but doing that correctly, and in truth, depends on God-given understanding of how to do it, which is how God intended for us to live them---by the Spirit. (And this pretty much answers question two also.)

Discuss. 1. I believe to live by the letter is to live according to the letter while disregarding the Spirit. The fruits of the Spirit are always good.
2. One can only walk by the Spirit by faith, faith is believing in the truth, in this case the Spirit of truth. Faith in God.
There is no law, absolutely no law against the Spirit. Then if one is led by the Spirit they are not breaking God's law.
"Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies." - Romans 8:33
This can only be discerned by those who have the ability to discern, by faith.
"I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings." - Jeremiah 17:10
"Therefore by their fruits you will know them." - Matthew 7:20If you are violating God's Word, you aren't being Spirit led. tlsitd JohnWe should be careful to judge by the letter and ignore the Spirit, which is discerned by the fruits.
"...the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." - 1 Corinthians 2:14
A good example is this:
Let us suppose that it is written in the word that all Christians should greet themselves in this and that way.
Then when someone comes to you greeting you in a different manner, but he has you as a friend in his heart and he loves you.
But then you say to him that he is a transgressor who does not know God and was not led by the Spirit because he has violated God's Word.
When obviously, he has not violated God's law.
"Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life." - Proverbs 4:23
"...that you may have an answer for those who boast in appearance and not in heart." - 2 Corinthians 5:12
"I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings." - Jeremiah 17:10
"Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith." - Romans 3:27
Blessings!

Let me answer these two questions with a metaphor.
If I want to play basketballl, I need to mentally learn the rules and physically practice the game. The rules don’t make me a good player, but I can’t play without them. How much is a basket worth? What’s the penalty for a foul? With no rules, it’s not a civilized game.
I could be a superstar at shooting and passing. But then what? I don’t know the rules. I expect the other team to lay down and play no defense because I can’t draw up a play to get around them. I might be the best shooter in the world, but I don’t respect the game of basketball. This is like a Christian trying to get by on uneducated faith.
On the other extreme, I could study the rules all day, memorize Naismith’s biography, and draw up brilliant screens — but then I go outside and I can’t even dribble. I couldn’t score a basket if my life depended on it. Once again, I might a competent strategist, but I don’t respect basketball as an athletic sport. This is like a Christian who lives by the letter.
When study and practice work together, I can become a great player who executes great teamwork.
So we need both faith and education.

Blessings! This goes back to what I said about knowing how to keep the commands of the New Testament, which depends on the Holy Spirit giving the individual understanding of what they mean and how to apply them (which is faith). In my opinion the situation like what you described would fall under what Paul discussed in Romans 14. It's a matter of knowing what to make an issue of and what to overlook for the sake of love and peace and to build up the other person in their faith by overlooking something that isn't critical.
But again, this is a matter of spiritual discernment. This is not the case with everything---that just because a person is ignorant of what the Scriptures teach about something, that whatever that is should be allowed or encouraged. Sometimes it can and should be overlooked, other times it should be addressed in love to lead the other person to what the Bible teaches that Christians should do. This is the work of the Holy Spirit to do---showing us what to do and how in various situations according to God's will.
If a Christian sister came to me in distress about something, and she was dressed in a way that I deemed immodest, I wouldn't take her to task over her outfit and tell her to come back when she was covered up, I would listen to her and try to help her. It's not because modest dress isn't important to God, but that wouldn't be the priority in such a case. Love would take precedence. There might be another time when I could talk to her about her clothing.
There is no law against the virtues of the Holy Spirit, but the Holy Spirit teaches us how to keep Christ's law (His commandments) while acting according to those virtues; in which case we are not breaking it, but keeping it correctly. God's Spirit is not in conflict with the commands of His word; God intends for us to and will lead us in keeping those while walking in love. Faith dictates how we keep God's commands. He is the one who determines what the priority is and what is acceptable to set aside or overlook on a certain occasion and what is not, not us.
(We do have to be very careful about this, that we're not breaking God's commandments for the sake of trying to love others or accomplish something we believe is noble, or to do something we believe is necessary, believing that our good intentions justify disobeying the Lord. They don't. To obey is better than sacrifice.)

I was speaking figuratively, you can choose other item such as agreeing exactly how each one should worship God and things like that.
And say:
You do not worship like it is written, you are not from God. You are not being led by the Spirit.
"There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?" - James 4:12
But couldn't we simply love one another in truth?!
And they say:
No, love does not cover rebellion against God's words, which are truth. It makes me sad. I want more love.

But couldn't we simply love one another in truth?! What is truth? That's the question Pilate asked before he spun and walked away. I don't think anyone here disagrees with loving each other in truth. We are trying to define what truth looks like.

We are trying to define what truth looks like. "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth." - John 17:17
"For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." - Galatians 5:13
"Let all things be done decently and in order." - 1 Corinthians 14:40
"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." - 1 Corinthians 10:31
"He who does not love does not know God, for God is love." - 1 John 4:8

He didn't see any conflict between obedience to God's commands and faith or walking in love, and he taught and lived by all three; so clearly, it's possible.)
